Weidner Cares Team Braves Burros and Sun in California

Weidner Cares

Recently, the Weidner Cares team headed out to sunny California where nearly 50 Weidner associates partnered with True Innocents Equine Rescue (TIER) to assist with rebuilding and revamping their facility.

TIER is a “501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that rescues abused, neglected, abandoned and unwanted horses primarily in Southern California. By networking with local Animal Control Agencies, Humane Societies, and other rescue organizations, we strive to help as many horses as we can. Our adoption program helps our horses find Safe, Responsible, Loving, Caring homes while our Sanctuary horses remain under the care of TIER for the remainder of their time on earth. Through our Youth Outreach & Volunteer programs, these magnificent horses continue to unconditionally give of themselves as teachers to people of all ages.”

Due to budgeting restrictions, TIER personnel were unable to rebuild all of the stalls and arenas they had at their previous location. The Weidner Cares team worked to help organize and clean their barn and storage area. They repainted and cleaned stables, tables, and enclosed and fenced off several areas around the ranch to help protect the horses from potential hazards, installed a new drip irrigation system, and cleaned out a number of horse stalls.

One of the larger projects they tackled was building a new shade structure for the four burros, also known as wild donkeys. The team worked all day to construct two 8’x24’ freestanding structures to help protect the burros from nature’s elements.

In a heartfelt thank you on Facebook, TIER’s director, Gail posted: “There are just not enough words to convey our appreciation. Grateful doesn’t seem to truly emphasize how we feel. The Weidner Cares group have truly made a difference in lives of the horses currently at TIER, the lives of those that may come to TIER, daily management and the lives of our volunteers and supporters. THANK YOU WEIDNER CARES!”

Weidner and CORT Oklahoma Food Drive 2017

We are going to do some amazing things here. On behalf of the organization & the people we serve I just want to thank you all so much.

We have been in business since 1991 helping people who have been homeless, living on the street, & living in shelters. We’ve been meeting with people who need affordable housing. We have 25 different apartment buildings in 20 different neighborhoods in Oklahoma communities. This particular property you are in is called Yale Apartments. If you remember a few years ago the downtown YMCA closed, about 140 people lived in that facility. Those 140 people were facing homelessness and some of our friends went out and helped raise money, we also got some money from the state & we built Yale Apartments. There are 76 apartment units here & a lot of people have lived here who at one-time were on the streets, but now they have their own home.

We try to help people with physical healthcare, mental healthcare, and dental health. One of our new initiatives is to help people get the dental care that they desperately need to help them become self-sustainable. A lot of the people here are very very low to no income & this food right here will make all the difference in the world for them in terms of what they are doing. On behalf of the organization I just want to thank you all soo much.

More Ritz Classic Apartment Homes sign raising

alright friends, we are sitting here in Salt Lake City. The site of Weidner Apartment Homes newest development called Ritz Classic Apartment Homes. We are getting ready to put that sign up. Pretty cool. 289 apartment homes going to go in here & that sign is close to 60 years old, just been refurbished & we are getting ready to put that thing up. It will take a few hours & we will check back in later.

Well here you go friends, the Ritz Classic sign! We are getting ready to put it back in place in the basket truck. This thing is amazingly tall.

The sign is going in right now, it’ll be probably till next year before we have this property broken ground and we get our first apartment. We wanted to start getting some awareness here on state street, it is generally pretty heavily traveled. We thought the sign would help us get a little exposure. Can’t wait to take some shots at nighttime to see the LEDs. Don’t know if you can see it, but outlining the bowling pin is red LEDs and the inside where it says classic are yellow LEDs.

Raising the refurbished Ritz Classic Apartment Homes sign

Greg: Alright guys this is kinda cool. As I said I am here in South Salt Lake. It is a beautiful day, as you can see. I am here for the raising of the classic sign of the Ritz Classic Apartment Homes that Weidner is building and I have Joel with me. Joel is with YESCO, YESCO is the sign company & he is going to talk with us a bit about this cool sign. Tell me what is going on and what we are doing today?

Joel: Alright, we got the historic bowling pin that has been up since 1958 and it represents a bowling alley that everybody took their kids to, that youth groups came to when they were young & bowling and skating; everybody remembers it, it is very nostalgic for the community. When the bowling alley went away and Weidner purchased the property to build on, the community, especially the city, wanted the sign to stay and it is staying. We took a long look at the sign & did an in-depth survey and determined that the sign would not be strong enough to leave up. Once we started taking off the rusted elements around the sign it was no longer structurally sound, so it needed to be rebuilt. We took the original design and we made it new, we gave it fresh colors, and we are putting it back up.

Greg: Right on, so it was built in 1958, that thing has seen some weather! The refurbished sign has some elements of the original sign, but it has some new components as well, right?

Joel: Yes, absolutely. The things that remained are the pipe in the ground and letter boxes. The pipe that you see here at this base is a bigger pipe that is sleeved over the original pipe, it is welded off to the original and then we’ve added a number of rods which extend into the concrete footing; all of that was engineered & all of the base is original to the old sign. The red cabinets that you see, just the outline of the cabinets, have been on the sign for about 20 years. The boxes were still in good condition so we reused them, but we put new faces on them, new copy, new letters, and new LEDs. The original sign had a lot of neon on it & we wanted to maintain that look. Instead of using neon which uses a lot of power, has maintenance issues, and tends to go out every year or so when it gets cold, we went with LEDs instead. The LEDs have a contoured tube around them to make them look like neon, but they are LEDs and much more efficient.

Greg: Right on, so we are putting this back up. Is it going to take the guys a few days to finish it out?

Joel: Yeah, we want to set the crane free today, so they are going to weld if off and make it structurally sound. We will weld off the pin itself to the base, then we can take away the crane, and then we will work on adding the architectural elements.

Greg: Alright right, we are excited to have YESCO as a partner! This is going to be a really cool way to signify an apartment community that will be right behind here. We are going to be putting up 287 apartment homes soon, thanks you guys for helping us do that. Weidner and CORT Partner in Food Drive

Weidner Oklahoma Food Drive

Weidner Apartment Homes and CORT Furniture are collaborating on a food drive to benefit Mental Health Association Oklahoma. MHAOK is “an advocacy voice representing people impacted by mental illness and homelessness in communities throughout Oklahoma.” MHAOK focuses on housing, education, advocacy, support, recovery, youth, and service. “Our programs work because of the professional staff and the numerous caring and dedicated volunteers who provide insight and support to those seeking assistance. Every day we work to build and improve the lives of the people we serve, so that they may be one day closer to victory over mental illness.”

Participating properties will be accepting food donations through May 10th. Some of the desired donations are:

Peanut Butter / Chili / Soups / Canned Tuna & Chicken / Canned Veggies and Fruit  / Bags of Rice or Beans  / Canned Tomatoes / Any kind of pasta / Pasta Sauce / Cereal / Condiments / Cheese or Peanut Butter Crackers / Applesauce / Fruit Cups / Granola Bars / Cereal Bars / Ramen Noodles / Trail Mix / Tomato Juice / Fruit Snacks / Dried Fruits / Packaged Nuts / Beef Jerky / Macaroni and Cheese / Pretzels or Goldfish / Crackers / Oatmeal / Pop Tarts / Zip Lock Bags / Cat & Dog Food, Too!

Donations will go directly to individuals and families impacted by mental illness and homelessness who have moved off the streets and into one of the Association’s 1,500 units of housing across Tulsa.

Residents who donate 3 or more items to the food drive will be entered in to a drawing to receive $100 off their rent. New residents whose rental applications have been approved can also participate to receive $100 off their move-in deposits.

Vladimir Usash Receives the Weidner Lifetime Achievement Award

Lifetime Achievement Award

In recognition for 18 years of exemplary service, Weidner Apartment Homes awarded Vladimir the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Vladimir began his career with Weidner at Soundview as the Maintenance Supervisor. Hard work and attention to detail led to a new position as Service Manager at Island Park, which he excelled at for several years. Residents and fellow teammates came to rely on Vladimir for his dedication and expertise, resulting in his being chosen to lead the transition of Waterbury Park in 2007. The management transition at Waterbury Park was flawless due to Vladimir’s great attitude, positive energy, and gracious approach.

Hearing from a few people that an individual excels in their position is always impressive and well-received. Hearing it from every Community Director, Area Director and Regional Director who’ve had the opportunity to work with Vladimir is spectacular. All who have worked with Vladimir share the same high opinion of his work ethic, humility, and personal integrity.

Vladimir is also the recipient of numerous awards since 2004, including “Above and Beyond,”  “Consistent Customer Service Satisfaction,” and the “All Over It” award.

The Lifetime Achievement Award is a culmination of those accomplishments, and is a testament to the personal attention and commitment Vladimir has to Weidner Apartment Homes, the residents, and his coworkers.

The Weidner team would like to congratulate Vladimir on his incredible contribution over the past 18 years! Bravo, Vladimir!
