Halloween is a big and fun celebration for many. At the same time, it can be an overwhelming experience for some, particularly our pets. Whether you’re having a Halloween party in your apartment or are planning on going out, remember to plan for your furry family members too. Keep your dogs, cats, and other pets safe by following these simple tips:
Avoid dangerous Halloween ornaments.
Do not use Halloween decorations that may hurt your pet, such as chicken-wire, pointy objects or items that may contain toxic materials. Also, make sure you don’t leave lit candles unsupervised.
Keep Halloween candy out of your pets’ reach
Did you know that chocolates and other sweets can be poisonous for your pets if they consume them? If you need to take a break from giving out candy, place the candy bowl up high where Fido can’t get to it or cover it tightly to keep kitty away. Also remember to dispose of any candy wrappers in a garbage can with a closed lid.
Keep your pets inside on Halloween
Some mischief-makers might think it’s funny to tease or hurt animals during this spooky holiday, so it’s best not to take any chances. Keep your pets confined and away from your apartment home entrance. Also consider making sure your pet is properly identified with a microchip and ID tag in case of an accidental escape through the door while you may be distracted with trick-or-treaters.
Consider your pet’s comfort when it comes to costumes
If you‘re planning on dressing your pets, purchase costumes that not restrict movement, hearing, eyesight, or the ability to breathe. It’s a good idea to try let your pets get used to the costume ahead of time. Allow them to roam inside your apartment while wearing their pet costumes and observe if they can move around comfortably.
Leave your small pets safely at home
It’s not recommended to take smaller dogs out for trick or treating. They can become easily scared by humans’ costumes or get hurt or lost in the dark while exploring new neighborhoods.
