Today is Read Across America Day, also known as Dr. Seuss Day! This holiday celebrates the birth of famed childrens’ author Theodor Seuss Geisel who wrote many recognizable stories such as The Cat in the Hat. The purpose of this day is to encourage children to read more books and stir excitement about reading in general. If you are looking for ways to celebrate this national holiday, keep reading for some tips and tricks.
Visit the Library
Head over to your local library to celebrate Read Across America Day! We recommend taking the kiddos to the branch near you to pick out a few books to bring home. Take turns reading a page or alternate reading an entire book to each other. The more enthusiastic you are about the event, the more excited the kids will be about reading in the future. You can even turn the trip to the library into a big event to really ensure that they associate the library with fun.
Read The Book Version of Your Favorite Movie
Do you have a favorite film that you could watch on repeat? Instead of sitting in front of the TV tonight, try reading it instead. You may actually find that you read it faster since you already know what to expect and can anticipate the next move. This is also a great idea if your children have favorite movies or TV shows. Try to do the voices and act out the scenes for added excitement!
Dive Deep Into a Particular Author
If you have a favorite author, consider reading all of their books to celebrate Read Across America Day! If you like one of their books, there’s a good chance you will like their other ones too. Once you have an author to read religiously, you might find yourself inspired to read more often or even look forward to their releases and book signings.
Make the most of Read Across America Day by cracking open a great read! We recommend visiting the library, reading the book version of your favorite film, and diving deep into a particular author. What do you plan to read today? Feel free to share it with us in the comments below!
