Spring is upon us, and what better way to celebrate than with some gardening? Lucky for you, your Weidner apartment is the perfect place to start an indoor herb garden; this is also a great way to add some additional flavor to your cooking while providing your apartment with some greenery. Keep reading for some helpful tips and tricks to get you started.
Find the Best Spot
The first step to crafting your own indoor herb garden is to find the best spot for success. Herbs need as much natural light as possible, so place them in a sunny area near a window or on your patio or balcony that receives about six hours of sun daily. If you opt for herbs that require less light, like mint or thyme, you can choose a west-facing window. You will know that your herbs are not receiving enough light if they have poor growth, unusually long stems between leaf sets, and the leaves' stems are abnormally pale or begin to turn yellow. Once you find the perfect spot, your plant will do the rest!
Ensure a Great Setup
Be sure to set your garden up for success. If you rush at the beginning and don’t set things up properly, you will have to deal with more speed bumps along the way. One of the most important things to consider is drainage. Herbs cannot sit in water, or their roots will rot, so we recommend placing a saucer or liner under the pot to catch water and protect your surfaces. It’s also important to consider the temperature indoors. Indoor herbs prefer the same temperatures that most people do, so typically around 65 to 70 degrees. If you are comfortable, they probably are too.
Choose the Right Herbs for You
Now comes the fun part of choosing what exactly you want to grow. First, consider what herbs and spices you utilize the most and see if you can grow them indoors. Some of our favorite culinary herbs to grow include basil, chives, lemon balm, marjoram, mint, oregano, parsley, rosemary, sage, and thyme. At the end of the day, this little garden is all about you, so choose wisely and find the herbs that will offer the most reward for the work you put into growing them.
