When and Where

The Midland Downtown Farmers Market takes place near our Midland, Texas, apartments at the Museum, from the first Saturday in April through the last Saturday in October. It begins at 8:30 a.m., and lasts till 12:30 p.m. As the seasons change around harvest time, the winter market begins and takes place on the second Saturday of each month downtown. So no matter what time of year it is, you never have to go without delightful, locally grown goods.

The Goods

What's sold at the farmers market varies from week to week, depending on what local vendors have available. However, in general, you can expect to find produce that's locally and sustainably grown, local meats, local honey, baked goods, canned and pickled items and fair-trade organic coffee. There are also doggy treats for your furry friends plus hand-knit products, handmade body products and handmade jewelry. You'll have to show up to the farmers market to find out what other surprises are in store. Talk about a treasure trove of local finds! Everyone who sells at the market creates, makes or raises what they sell.

The farmers market has somewhat of a festival atmosphere, given that it also features live music, food trucks, library bookmobile, kids' story time and pet-adoption days. Plan to spend part of your weekend combining shopping and eating while strengthening local connections.

Fans of crawling creatures will be thrilled to know that the Abilene Zoo is home to the largest spider in the world. The spider shares its home in the Zoo's Reptile House with many other fascinating creatures, including lots of different kinds of snakes, lizards, turtles and tortoises.

You Can See a 13-Foot Alligator!

The Wetlands of America exhibit features ducks, swans, chickens, flamingos — and a big American alligator. Butterflies like to hang out here too during their migration season. Take it all in from the exhibit's pretty boardwalk.
