While winter may be going strong into January, we have our eyes set on spring! Specifically, the beautiful flowers and plants that bloom under the beautiful, warm spring sun.<\/p>\n

When you live in an apartment, it can sometimes be hard to envision having great greenery, given that nearly your entire space is indoors only. In reality, having apartment plants is not only easy, it's lots of fun!<\/p>\n

We've collected some great information and tips to help you start your very own DIY indoor garden, right in your very own Weidner apartment!<\/p>\n

The good news about a DIY indoor garden is you can feel like a farmer without putting in all those long hours! Not to mention, it's a great way to beat those winter blues as you watch life blossoming all around you. The best part? There are plenty of apartment plants that will work wonderfully for your space!<\/p>\n

The basics of successful indoor gardening are good seeds in the proper soil, the right amount of water and light, nutrients, as needed and, of course, a little love.<\/p>\n

To successfully grow your DIY indoor garden, you'll need:<\/p>\n

\n
• A designated space. Try a windowsill, special shelf, or table.<\/li>\n
• A combination of natural light and grow lights work best.<\/li>\n
• Temperature control. Indoor gardens prefer the temperature at 65 to 75 degrees.<\/li>\n
• You'll need a spray bottle for spritzing and a glass of water near the plants.<\/li>\n
• Indoor potting soil.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

  Once you've chosen a designated space for your garden, you'll want to make sure you have something in place to catch any water spills. A small piece of tarp would work wonderfully! Now you get to decide what you want to grow and enjoy the "fruits of your labor." <\/p>\n

  There's a variety of plants and herbs that flourish in an indoor garden, so long as you tend to it like only a good farmer would! Many "trendy plants" also make great apartment plants with the right care and attention. While the ever-popular cacti and air plants are great apartment plant go-to, we personally feel that a DIY indoor garden should also serve some functionality and fully encourage trying your hand at some tastier apartment plants! Some of the more common herbs grown inside are Basil, Chives, Cilantro, Lavender, Parsley, Oregano, and Rosemary. To round out that perfect salad, try these vegetables: Peppers, Salad Greens, Kale, Chard, Carrots, Onions, and Cherry Tomatoes. All of these are great plants for small spaces!<\/p>\n

  The most common mistakes made in all gardening and indoor gardening especially, are overwatering and underwatering<\/a>. If the edges of your plant's leaves are turning brown, you're probably underwatering, whereas, if the bottom leaves are dropping, you're most likely overwatering. Lots of plants for small spaces don't even need to be watered more than a few times a month!<\/p>\n

  If you'd like to take the guesswork out of indoor gardening, try purchasing plants that are already potted and ready to go and grow. Your local nursery is a great resource for you when you start planting and are likely to have lots of already potted plants to make your DIY indoor garden as easy as possible!<\/p>\n
