Giving back is a core part of Weidner’s culture, and our recent Weidner Cares community service event in Alaska brought that commitment to life. Our Alaska team partnered with Covenant House Alaska, an organization dedicated to providing shelter, support, and hope for youth experiencing homelessness, trafficking, or other challenging circumstances.
Each year, Weidner associates across every region come together for Weidner Cares, a company-wide initiative that reflects our commitment to serving local communities. By dedicating an entire workday to volunteer service, our teams use their time, talents, and expertise to revitalize nonprofit and community spaces, creating a lasting impact in the places where we live and work.
This year, the Alaska region set out to refresh and improve the spaces that support local youth as they work toward stability and a brighter future. Throughout the day, associates completed projects across the Covenant House Alaska campus, helping create cleaner, safer, and more welcoming environments for residents, staff, and visitors.
Volunteers deep-cleaned and restored the gym, organized storage and community areas, refreshed the art room and chapel, upgraded maintenance spaces, improved curb appeal, removed graffiti, installed new LED lighting, completed landscaping projects, and painted the MACK House to help make it feel even more like home for its residents.
Each project, no matter the size, helped create spaces where young people can feel supported, find stability, and focus on healing, growth, and the opportunities ahead.
We’re grateful to Covenant House Alaska for welcoming us into its mission, and to every Alaska associate who shared their time, energy, and talents to help make a lasting difference for local youth.

The North Carolina and South Carolina teams spent their 2026 Weidner Cares community service day volunteering at Sterling Elementary School in Pineville, NC.
Weidner Cares is our annual company-wide philanthropic program, hosted in each region, where we close our doors for an entire workday to give back to the communities in which we live and work. With our team’s unique tools, talents, and skills, we can make entire transformations for nonprofit or community-oriented spaces in just one day!
Our mission at Sterling Elementary was to help prepare the campus for another successful school year, and from the moment volunteers arrived, they got to work creating spaces where students and teachers would feel welcomed, supported, and inspired.
Throughout the day, teams worked across the campus, completing improvements that touched nearly every part of the school. Volunteers refreshed the teachers' lounge with new paint and updates, restored the outdoor classroom and community garden, repaired benches and planter boxes, completed landscaping enhancements, cleaned outdoor gathering spaces, and enhanced playground areas used daily by students.
Not every contribution involved paint or power tools. Several volunteers spent time creating colorful, handwritten encouragement cards, leaving uplifting messages for students as they begin the new school year. These small gestures remind students that an entire community is cheering them on.
The day showcased what Weidner Cares is all about: coming together, sharing our talents, and investing in the communities where we live and work.
Thank you to every associate who volunteered their time, energy, and heart to help make Sterling Elementary School an even better place for students, teachers, and families.

If you and your four-legged friend are searching for a new apartment, there are plenty of important factors to consider. Across the U.S. and Canada, more and more apartment communities are introducing pet-friendly policies to accommodate the millions of pet owners. From choosing the right pet-friendly apartment to understanding pet policies and etiquette, this guide will help you and your pet confidently settle into your new community!
Finding a Pet-Friendly Apartment
Not all apartments that allow pets are truly welcoming to them. The best pet-friendly communities make it clear they value your furry companion just as much as you do. During your apartment tours, look for features such as on-site dog parks, pet waste stations, and spacious green areas where pets can play. Notice whether residents are out walking their dogs and whether there’s a sense of community around responsible pet ownership. Also, remember to pay attention to signage about pets! Are there many restrictions on where pets can go, or does the environment feel inclusive?
Evaluating these details will help you gauge not just whether pets are permitted, but if the community genuinely embraces them — a difference that can make your pet feel truly at home.
Pet Policies to Ask About
Every apartment sets its own rules regarding pets. Some communities have breed restrictions that may prohibit breeds known for aggression, such as Pit Bulls and Rottweilers. Others may require dogs to be under a certain weight limit.
Ask clear questions about:
- The number of pets allowed per household
- Additional fees, such as pet deposits and monthly pet rent
- Designated areas where pets are or aren’t permitted
- Policies for pets beyond cats and dogs, like rabbits, birds, or reptiles
Understanding these guidelines before signing a lease helps you plan for costs and set expectations.
Above all, always be transparent about your pet’s breed and status. Attempting to hide a pet or misrepresent their information can violate your lease terms, potentially leading to fines or eviction. Honesty ensures a positive relationship with management and your neighbors.
Helping Your Pet Adjust to a New Space
Moving can be stressful for pets as well as people. The best way to support your pet’s transition into a new apartment is to create a sense of safety and routine:
- Stick closely to your established schedule for walks, playtime, and meals to provide familiar structure
- Set up your pet’s bedding, toys, and bowls right away, so they have a comfortable, dedicated area
- If possible, take a few days off to be at home during the initial adjustment period, offering reassurance and companionship
- Go on frequent walks together to help your pet get used to new hallways, elevators, outdoor spaces, and neighbors
- Be patient and attentive because adjustment takes time, and your calm support helps them build confidence in their new environment
Pet Etiquette and Apartment Living
Respectful, responsible pet ownership is the foundation of a thriving apartment community. Practicing good pet etiquette not only keeps your relationship with neighbors positive but also enriches your living experience. Make sure to:
- Always clean up after your pet, both indoors and outdoors
- Use a leash in all common areas
- Supervise your pet at all times
- Address barking or noise issues. Remember, professional training can help if needed!
- Prevent your pet from jumping on others in shared spaces such as the dog park
- Follow all community rules regarding pet-accessible and restricted areas, like pool decks or clubhouses
What About Non-Pet Owners?
Even if you don’t own a pet, there are many advantages to living in a pet-friendly community. Pet owners are often out and about, making it easier to meet neighbors and build connections. A pet-friendly community can also promote a safer environment since dogs are quick to alert residents to unusual activity. If you’re considering pet ownership in the future, renting in such a community offers insights and practical advice from experienced neighbors, making your transition smoother when the time comes.

Working Out Indoors: Managing Heat in Small Spaces
Don’t let summer heat interrupt your at-home fitness routine. With a few smart adjustments, you can stay active and comfortable right inside your apartment, regardless of the weather!
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
First things first: drink water! Staying properly hydrated is essential for safe workouts, especially during hot weather. Drink water before, during, and after your exercise. Watch for early signs of dehydration, such as headaches or dizziness, and sip fluids regularly to stay energized.
Keep Workouts Cool: Heat Management Strategies
Maintain safety and comfort with these effective options:
Improve airflow: Use oscillating or tower fans, and ventilate before starting your routine. Close blinds afterward to block out excess heat.
Use apartment cooling: Rely on a programmable thermostat or a window AC unit to pre-cool your workout area.
Lower humidity: A quiet dehumidifier can keep the air drier for a more comfortable workout environment.
Track conditions: Target a temperature between 68°F and 75°F. Use both a thermometer and a hygrometer to check heat and humidity levels.
Eliminate unnecessary heat sources: Switch off extra lighting and opt for LEDs.
Dress in moisture-wicking fabrics: These materials help regulate body temperature during exercise.
Time your workouts: Early mornings or late evenings offer cooler conditions, so plan intense routines during these periods.
Hydrate with electrolytes: Alternate water with electrolyte drinks during extended sessions.
Pay attention to your body: If you begin to overheat, slow down, take a break, or switch to gentler exercises.
Apartment-Friendly Exercise Ideas During Heatwaves
You don’t need a full gym to stay fit right in your apartment, even when it’s hot out. Here are some great, simple exercises to stay moving:
Jump Around: Jumping jacks, apartment-safe jump ropes, and step routines work well in small spaces and generate less noise. Remember to stretch first, then turn on your favorite playlist with headphones!
Step Up with the Stairs: Use your building’s stairs for step-ups or keep a compact platform at home for convenience.
Try these 7 Toning Exercises from Planco: From push-ups to planking, these exercises are great for indoor workouts in your living room or at the gym.
Dance Anywhere: It doesn’t seem possible that dancing is considered an exercise when it’s so much fun! Consider taking a dance class or simply turning up the music and dancing to your own beat. YouTube also has plenty of dance-at-home tutorials that will keep you amused while you burn calories. Silent DJ dance parties are also a trendy way to get in shape. Dancers appear at an announced location, don headphones, and start dancing.
Get a Workout by Cleaning: Household chores like vacuuming, mopping, and scrubbing help you burn calories while keeping your home tidy. Focus on one room at a time to keep moving throughout the day. It may not sound super fun, but deep cleaning can be extremely satisfying at the end!
Walk Indoors: Shop ‘Til You Drop: If it is too warm outside, visit a nearby mall to walk indoors. In fact, many open early for walkers to get their steps in.

Everyone brings their own personality and habits to a shared home, so living with others can sometimes be challenging. However, with a few clear ground rules and open communication, the rewards of splitting expenses and sharing space can far outweigh the challenges.
Follow the Golden Rule
Our top tip for harmonious roommate living is simple: treat your housemates the way you’d like to be treated. This means respecting their belongings (yes, even those tempting Girl Scout cookies), locking up when leaving the apartment, and giving a heads-up before inviting guests over, especially if someone in your apartment has an important day coming up. Starting from a place of respect sets the stage for a smooth co-living experience.
Establish Boundaries and Communicate Preferences
Right from the start, talk openly about lifestyle preferences and boundaries. Even if you’re already friends, there may be surprises, like different temperature comfort zones, varying tolerance for noise, or opposite sleep schedules. Discuss topics such as:
- Preferred thermostat settings
- Quiet hours or noise tolerance
- Morning or night routines
- Cleaning expectations
Clear conversations early on help prevent future misunderstandings and keep everyone comfortable.
Always Ask Before Hosting Gatherings
Personal space is valuable. Just because you’re in the mood for a movie night doesn’t mean everyone else is. Before planning a get-together, check in with your roommate first. If they’ve had a long day or need quiet to focus, consider hosting elsewhere. This small act of consideration preserves trust and comfort at home.
Resolve Misunderstandings Quickly and Compassionately
Conflicts and miscommunications happen, but how you handle them makes all the difference. Commit to resolving issues promptly and with empathy. Listen actively to your roommate’s concerns, even if you think you’re not at fault, and aim for solutions that work for everyone. Practicing patience and understanding goes a long way toward maintaining a healthy living environment.
Respect Shared and Private Spaces
Privacy is paramount. Don’t enter your roommate’s bedroom without asking, and avoid using their personal items, even if they are left in shared spaces, without permission. If you do borrow something and lose it, show appreciation by replacing it.
Honor Social Media Privacy Preferences
Consider your roommate’s comfort both online and offline. Before posting photos or tagging them on social media, always ask. This simple step helps everyone feel relaxed and respected in their living environment.
Support Each Other in Emergencies
You don’t have to be best friends to be good housemates. Share emergency contact details, and if someone is locked out, not feeling well, or facing a problem, offer a hand. Life is easier when you know your housemate has your back.
Set Clear Financial Agreements
Money can be a source of stress if expectations aren’t clear. Write down who’s responsible for what, whether it’s rent, utilities, groceries, or shared services. If you’re splitting certain costs, keep communication open and follow through to avoid misunderstandings.
Enjoy the Experience (Friendship Not Required!)
You don’t have to be best friends to get along as housemates. Sometimes great friendships grow over time, and sometimes it’s just about respect and courtesy. Stay open, positive, and considerate, and you’ll create a smooth, enjoyable roommate experience.

The space in your apartment is exactly what you make of it! Whether you’re living in a cozy studio or a spacious three-bedroom layout, maximizing every inch will help you create a comfortable, stylish, and functional home. Smart use of space can dramatically improve your daily comfort and make your home more inviting, no matter your floor plan. In this blog, we will explore room-by-room strategies and layout ideas to make the most of your apartment.
Living Room: Multipurpose Meets Comfort
Your living room is often the central hub for entertaining or relaxing. To make it both welcoming and efficient:
Opt for Functional Furniture: Choose a sofa bed or a sectional with storage. Ottoman coffee tables or benches with hidden compartments offer a spot to stash blankets or games while providing extra seating for guests.
Create Defined Areas: Use area rugs or open shelving units to divide a studio or open-plan space subtly. This visually distinguishes your lounge, workspace, and dining area without physical barriers.
Vertical Storage Solutions: Install tall bookshelves, ladder shelves, or étagère towers to display décor and store necessities. A decorative ladder, leaning in a corner, is ideal for hanging throws or even bags.
Layout Tip: Float your sofa away from the wall if space allows. This can create a cozy conversation nook and allow for circulation or storage baskets behind.
Bedroom: Restful, Organized, and Efficient
The bedroom should be your sanctuary, even in a compact layout.
Multipurpose Beds: Make the most of your layout with a storage bed or a lofted frame. Under-bed drawers, rolling bins, or a captain’s bed will keep off-season clothing, luggage, and linens out of sight but easily accessible.
Nightstand Alternatives: Consider wall-mounted shelves, narrow side tables, or even a small chest of drawers as bedside storage that takes up less floor space.
Built-In Features: Use over-the-door organizers for shoes, accessories, or extra toiletries to maximize closet and vertical surface space.
Layout Tip: Place your bed lengthwise against the wall in studios or guest rooms, so it doubles as lounge seating during the day.
Kitchen & Dining: Smart Storage and Seamless Flow
The kitchen and dining area should support both meal prep and gatherings, regardless of size.
Movable Islands or Carts: A slim kitchen cart on wheels provides both extra counter space and storage that you can tuck away when not needed.
Wall-Mounted Organizers: Pegboards, magnetic spice racks, or floating shelves above your counters keep cookware and essentials visible and within reach.
Fold-Down Dining Tables: A wall-mounted, fold-down table or a drop-leaf set lets you host friends or enjoy meals, then reclaim valuable floor space afterwards.
Bathroom: Streamlined and Stylish Storage
Small bathrooms benefit hugely from clever organization.
Over-the-Toilet Shelving: Use stacked shelves or a storage unit above the toilet to store towels and toiletries.
Hooks and Rails: Install adhesive hooks on walls or the back of doors to hang robes, towels, or storage baskets.
Slim Cabinets and Bins: Choose slender cabinets or corner shelves for storing cleaning supplies, spare soaps, or cosmetics without cluttering limited floor space.
Entryway: Welcoming and Tidy
First impressions count, even in a small hallway.
Wall Hooks and Benches: Place wall-mounted hooks and a petite bench near the door for coats, bags, and shoes. Benches with cubbies keep everyday items organized and easy to grab.
Shoe Racks or Trays: A compact shoe rack controls clutter and protects your flooring.
Catch-All Station: Dedicate a small tray or mounted shelf for keys, mail, and pet leashes.

Now that you’ve settled on your new home, it’s time to focus on the rental agreement. Signing your lease secures your rental rate and outlines all the essentials for your stay.
To help you feel confident in this process, here’s a step-by-step guide to understanding your lease agreement, complete with key lease definitions every new renter should know. You'll also find important red flags to watch for, so you can move forward with peace of mind.
Step 1: Understand what a lease agreement is
A lease agreement is a binding legal contract between you (the tenant) and the landlord or property management company. This document spells out the terms, conditions, responsibilities, and rights of both parties during your stay. Your lease will specify the length of your rental period, the amount of rent, security deposits, maintenance policies, and any specific rules or regulations for the community.
Red Flags to Look Out For:
- Vague or missing information about your rights and the landlord’s obligations.
- Unusual clauses that waive your legal rights or limit your ability to report issues.
- Blank spaces or incomplete sections within the agreement.
Step 2: Read the entire lease document thoroughly
Carefully review every section of your lease agreement before signing. Look for these important details:
- Lease term: The length of your commitment (e.g., 12 months, month-to-month).
- Rent amount: Monthly payment, due date, and payment method.
- Security deposit: A refundable amount held against damages, along with conditions for return.
- Unit address: The specific apartment you’ll be living in.
- Utility responsibilities: Which utilities you’ll pay for and what’s covered by management.
- Contact information: Names and direct lines for your leasing office and maintenance team.
Many communities, like Solara Apartment Homes, offer secure online resident portals. These allow you to pay rent, request maintenance, and access community updates with ease at any time.
Red Flags to Look Out For:
- Hidden fees or unclear language about additional charges.
- Inconsistent information (such as a different rent amount on different pages).
- Rules or fees that weren’t discussed with you previously.
Step 3: Clarify your utility responsibilities
Examine the section on utilities. In most apartment communities, residents handle their own water, electricity, and other utility bills, though some leases include certain utilities in the rent. Double-check this section to ensure you’re clear on which utility accounts you need to set up.
Red Flags to Look Out For:
- You’re being asked to pay for utilities that are unusually high or unclear in scope.
- Utility responsibilities are not clearly assigned between the resident and management.
- No explanation for how utility costs are calculated or billed.
Step 4: Review the pet policy
If you have pets or plan to adopt one, check your community’s policies carefully. Confirm whether pets are allowed, if there are breed or size restrictions, and what additional costs might apply, such as:
- Pet deposit: A refundable sum for potential damages caused by pets.
- Pet rent: A fixed monthly fee for having a pet in your apartment.
- Pet amenities: Features such as pet stations or pet parks on the property.
Red Flags to Look Out For:
- “No-pet” policies are undisclosed during your initial tour or discussion.
- Excessive or non-refundable pet deposits and unclear breed or weight restrictions.
- Vague rules about the consequences for violating the pet policy.
Step 5: Go over “what-if” scenarios
First, take a moment to review the sublet policy! Many property management companies do not permit subleasing, which is when a current resident rents out their apartment or a room to someone not on the original lease. This arrangement can cause headaches if the subtenant fails to pay rent or comply with community guidelines. Always double-check whether subletting is allowed at your property and understand what’s required.
Next, find out what steps are needed if you need to end your lease—whether you’re planning not to renew or need to break your lease in an urgent situation. Knowing the process ahead of time will save stress later.
Red Flags to Look Out For:
- Vague or unclear policies regarding subleasing or lease terminations
- Surprise fees for subletting or ending your lease early that aren’t listed in writing
- Penalties for subleasing or breaking your lease without clear, transparent guidelines
- Lease agreements that do not specify notice periods or requirements for ending your lease
- Restrictions or conditions for ending your lease that are not clearly defined
- Staying informed about all leasing policies helps ensure a smooth and positive experience throughout your stay!
Step 6: Request and retain copies of your lease
Always collect signed copies of any paperwork, including your full lease agreement and addenda. If you complete these steps online, ask the leasing consultant to provide downloadable files for your records. Keeping these documents handy helps answer questions and protect your rights throughout your residency.
Red Flags to Look Out For:
- Not receiving a completed, signed copy of your lease and any addenda.
- Pressure to sign paperwork without sufficient time to review.
- Changes or additions to agreement terms after you’ve already signed.
