Anchorage, AK, is a great place for adventure seekers, offering beautiful natural landscapes, a rich historical background, and, most notably, a delicious culinary scene. Alaskan cuisine is renowned for its bold, locally inspired flavors, with seafood playing a pivotal role in the state’s culture and economy. In fact, in 2025 alone, Alaska’s commercial salmon harvest reached nearly 194.8 million fish, generating $541 million in revenue – and that’s just one aspect of their dining industry!

With this in mind, let’s delve into a few must-try dishes while in “Anchortown”, AK!

Wild Alaskan Salmon

Whether you prefer Chinook, sockeye, or coho, wild Alaskan salmon from glacier-fed rivers is an unforgettable dining experience. Salmon isn’t just a staple ingredient here; it’s a cornerstone of local history dating back centuries. Alaskans are so dedicated to protecting this resource that the state’s constitution includes robust sustainability laws to conserve wild salmon populations for future generations.

Salmon season runs from May through September, so summer is the perfect time to enjoy it at its freshest. Whether you crave a salmon burger, perfectly grilled filet, or smoked salmon, you’ll find an impressive array of recipes to suit your palate across the city. If you want a good rec or two, visit Kincaid Grill or Simon & Seafort’s Saloon for some of Anchorage’s best wild salmon dishes.

Red King Crab

Red King Crab is another sought-after Alaskan delicacy. Sourced from the cold, pristine waters of the North Pacific and the Barents Sea, this impressive crustacean boasts a sweet, buttery flavor and a leg span that can reach up to five feet. Yes, you heard that right; about the size of an adult!

You can find King Crab legs at local markets to steam at home, or let the experts at Glacier Brewhouse treat you to steamed Bering Sea King Crab Legs served with melted butter and roasted potatoes.

Reindeer Sausage

When you’re in downtown Anchorage and ordering breakfast, you’ll likely encounter the words “reindeer sausage” on the menu! Despite the name, most reindeer sausages are a savory blend of reindeer, pork, and beef, resulting in a juicy, flavorful taste. They’re easy to pick up at supermarkets or sample directly from popular reindeer dog stands downtown, like Red Umbrella Reindeer, where grilled onions and classic fixings complement the taste perfectly.

Akutaq

Called “Alaskan Ice Cream,” akutaq is a unique dessert rooted in Alaska Native traditions. It’s made from whipped animal fat (traditionally caribou or seal) combined with wild berries, and sometimes mixed with dried fish or meat. While it isn’t creamy like traditional ice cream, akutaq offers a fluffy, sweet-savory taste and nutritional value, rich in protein and vitamins. For those eager to sample this Alaska specialty, a visit to the Black Bull Native Store is a great place to start.

If you’re moving to Anchorage, Alaska, you might be wondering how to handle the winter, especially if chilly weather isn’t your norm! Alaskan winters bring daily high temperatures below 32°F and typically span from November through March or April, with snow often lasting until mid-April. Staying warm and comfortable during these months is key. Let’s explore some smart ways to keep cozy all winter long in Anchorage!

Wear Appropriate Clothing

Layering your clothing is the ultimate secret to staying warm in Alaska’s weather. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer — something like merino wool or high-performance synthetic fabrics — to help you stay dry. Then, add an insulating layer of fleece, sweaters, or vests to help trap body heat. Top it all off with a protective outer layer, such as a waterproof jacket and sturdy boots, to shield you from wind and snow. Don’t forget winter essentials such as wool socks, a warm hat, and insulated gloves.

Remember to avoid cotton, since it holds moisture and can actually make you feel colder. Stick to materials like merino wool and polyester that dry quickly and keep you comfortable.

Get Moving

Staying active is a fantastic way to keep warm, boost your mood, and make the most of the beautiful Anchorage winter! The city and nearby areas are home to a variety of fun, invigorating activities:

  • Flattop Mountain: Considered the “quintessential day hike,” Flattop Mountain in Chugach State Park is Anchorage’s most climbed peak. Trails suit all experience levels, but the most popular route is a 1.5-mile hike with a satisfying 1,280-foot elevation gain and unforgettable views.
  • Tony Knowles Coastal Trail: Stretching 11 miles, this scenic biking and hiking trail offers incredible panoramas of downtown Anchorage, the Chugach Mountains, Denali, and Fire Island. Keep your eyes peeled for moose and other local wildlife along the way!
  • Ice Fishing: Anchorage is surrounded by excellent ice fishing spots, including Jewel Lake, Delong Lake, Sand Lake, and Cheney Lake. Here, you might catch landlocked salmon, rainbow trout, arctic char, and grayling. Always ensure the ice is at least 5 inches thick before venturing out, and bring along ice picks and a rope for safety.
  • Alyeska Resort: Head to Alyeska Resort, home to Olympic gold medalist Tommy Moe and more than 1,400 skiable acres of land! Beginners will love the Hilltop Ski Area, which features 30 acres of gentle, groomed trails and meandering slopes just right for learning.

Try a Happy Light

With Anchorage’s winter days sometimes limited to just five hours of daylight, a Happy Light can be a game changer. These lightweight, tablet-style lamps are designed to mimic natural sunlight and help counteract the effects of light deprivation. They’re an excellent tool for maintaining energy and balancing your circadian rhythms during the darker months!

Make Sure to Get Your Vitamin D

Less sunlight in winter means your body makes less vitamin D, so it’s essential to get this nutrient another way. A great way to do this is to add more vitamin D-rich foods to your diet, primarily through oily fish like salmon, mackerel, and herring, or seafood such as oysters, shrimp, and flounder. Certain foods, like milk, orange juice, and cereal, may also be fortified with vitamin D (check the label to be sure). Vitamin D3 supplements are also widely available in pharmacies and grocery stores if you need an extra boost.

Castle Apartments: Your Anchorage Retreat from the Cold

Castle Apartments is your warm and welcoming refuge during the snowy Alaska months. Inside your spacious studio, one-or two-bedroom apartment, you’ll appreciate comfort-focused features like efficient baseboard heating, large closets, a modern kitchen with a dishwasher, and gorgeous Anchorage views.

Community amenities elevate your lifestyle even further. Unwind in the community garden, enjoy fresh coffee at the on-site coffee station, or benefit from the peace of mind that comes with on-site courtesy patrol.

Castle Apartments’ prime location, right along the Walter J. Hickel Parkway and the Seward Highway, places you at the heart of Anchorage’s best offerings. Take a brisk walk at nearby Minnesota Park, Old Hermit Park, or Muriel Park to keep active and enjoy the great outdoors, no matter the season.

Dean Weidner, Founder and Chairman of Weidner Apartment Homes, has been inducted into the Junior Achievement Alaska Business Hall of Fame in recognition of his lasting contributions to Alaska’s economy, housing landscape, and educational advancement. The honor reflects a career rooted in responsible growth, integrity, and a long-term commitment to strengthening communities through real estate investment.

Under Dean Weidner’s leadership, Weidner Apartment Homes has grown into one of the nation’s largest multifamily ownership and management companies while maintaining a strong sense of integrity and culture. In Alaska, the company is the largest owner of multifamily housing in Anchorage, managing 5,053 apartment homes across 44 communities, with a focus on stability, quality, and sustainable development.

A defining element of Weidner’s legacy is his investment in education and workforce development. Through partnerships with universities and technical institutions across the U.S. and Canada, the company supports real estate and property management programs designed to prepare students for long-term careers in the industry.

One of the most impactful of these partnerships is with the University of Alaska Anchorage, where Dean Weidner established the Weidner Property Management and Real Estate program within the College of Business and Public Policy. The program offers a four-year degree focused on multifamily real estate management. It combines academic instruction with experiential learning opportunities, including internships, job shadowing, and participation in local and national industry events. These efforts have strengthened the professional pipeline and expanded access to real-world career pathways for students across Alaska.

“If you want an industry to thrive, you have to invest in people long before they enter the workforce,” said Dean Weidner. This philosophy has guided both his leadership and philanthropic priorities.

Weidner’s humanitarian efforts were also celebrated at the event for his support in funding a charter flight that helped Ukrainian refugees escape the war occurring in their home country and relocate safely to Alaska. Weidner’s award was presented by a student who was one of the passengers on that flight and is now living in Anchorage with his family.

Weidner Apartment Homes extends its appreciation to Junior Achievement for recognizing leaders who use business as a force for positive impact. The organization remains proud to continue its work in Alaska and is deeply committed to supporting the communities it serves.

Imagine waking up to the crisp, clean air of Alaska, with the majestic Chugach Mountains as your backdrop and the vast Cook Inlet stretching out before you. For many, this sounds like a dream vacation, but in Anchorage, Alaska, it's just another beautiful day. This city isn't just Alaska's largest urban center; it's a unique place where wilderness and city life blend seamlessly. Let’s take a stroll through some of the most prominent parks in the city!

Kincaid Park

When it comes to year-round outdoor activities, Kincaid Park is unmatched. The massive municipal park spans approximately 1,500 acres and features 40 miles of walking trails, 20 miles of bike runs, and an abundance of wildlife. Kincaid caters to every type of outdoor enthusiast, with perfectly paved trails for walks, dirt trails for more rugged hiking, and singletrack paths that are a mountain biker’s dream. On top of that, the park provides a unique mix of natural terrain and recreational facilities to explore, including Little Campbell Lake, an 18-hole golf course, several soccer fields, and the sandy Cook Inlet coast. The dense spruce forests are the ideal habitat for moose, lynx, bears, foxes, eagles, porcupines, and owls, so be sure to bring a camera!

Earthquake Park

One of Anchorage’s most historically significant and visually striking areas is Earthquake Park. On March 27th, 1964, Alaska experienced the second-largest earthquake ever recorded. The earthquake was so large that it triggered massive landslides, particularly along the bluffs overlooking the Cook Inlet, creating a unique rippling pattern across the hills. Earthquake Park was built on the site of a neighborhood that collapsed, standing as a poignant memorial to this event and its lasting impact on the landscape and community.

Today, visitors can observe the remnants of the Great Alaskan Earthquake and learn about the area's history through signs throughout the park. But beyond the tragedy, Earthquake Park offers stunning views of Anchorage. From its vantage point, you can spot Beluga whales or Dall’s porpoise in the Inlet, and hike the beautiful 11-mile-long Tony Knowles Coastal Trail.

Far North Bicentennial Park

Stretching across over 4,000 acres, Far North Bicentennial Park is a beloved destination for outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds. With destinations such as Whitewater Gorge, Hill Top Ski Area, and Goose Lake, the park offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy Alaska’s wild beauty year-round. Nestled within the park’s natural setting, you’ll also find the Alaska Botanical Garden. This local gem features cultivated gardens, native wildflowers, and educational exhibits, creating a beautiful spot to recharge.

Chugach State Park

Anchorage’s iconic Chugach State Park is one of the largest state parks in the United States. Covering over 495,000 acres and housing 20 official campgrounds, the park is home to an array of landscapes, from mud flats to rugged mountain peaks, including must-see landmarks such as Eklutna Lake, Eagle River Valley, the Glen Alps, and the Portage Glacier. Anchorage residents are often seen hiking, biking, fishing, camping, and wildlife viewing year-round. Common wildlife sightings include Dall sheep, moose, black bears, and countless bird species, making every visit a new adventure.

Finding the perfect apartment in Juneau, Alaska, can be an exciting and unique living experience, with its stunning natural beauty and vibrant culture. Whether you're drawn to the breathtaking mountain views or the allure of living in Alaska's capital, this guide will help you navigate the apartment hunting process and highlight why Mendenhall Apartments might be at the top of your list.

Why Choose Juneau for Your Next Home?

Juneau is known for its picturesque landscapes, including the famous Mendenhall Glacier, offering a lifestyle that combines adventure with comfort. But why do people move to Juneau?

  • Natural Beauty: You’ll be surrounded by the spectacular landscapes of Alaska, like the majestic Nugget Falls, a 377-foot waterfall that feeds into Mendenhall Lake, and the Tracy Arm Fjord.  Regardless of your hobby, outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, and kayaking are plentiful. Adventure always calls in Juneau!
  • Community and Culture: With a rich history and a close-knit community, Juneau is a welcoming place with several destinations where you can take in the adventurous spirit of the Last Frontier. Visit the Alaska State Museum to learn about Alaska’s Indigenous community and the infamous Gold Rush. Alternatively, take a tour of the Alaska State Capitol and admire the stunning art pieces adorning the walls. Outdoorsy folks will also enjoy being in one of the greatest fishing spots, which is plentiful in salmon, halibut, and rockfish.
  • Economic Opportunities: As the state capital, Juneau hosts numerous government jobs, and the area’s largest employer is the State of Alaska. Not only that, but with the city’s natural landscape and unique tourism industry, residents enjoy access to various strong job sectors, including hospitality, outdoor recreation, maritime, research & development, and visitor services.

Is Juneau, Alaska, a Good Place to Live?

Living in Juneau comes with its unique set of advantages. The city is known for its high quality of life, with access to excellent amenities and services. However, potential residents often wonder about the cost of living and whether Juneau is a walkable city.

  • Cost of Living: While Alaska is known for its higher living costs, Juneau offers a range of housing options to fit different budgets. The average rent for apartments varies, but there are reasonable options available, especially when considering the value of living in such a beautiful location.
  • Walkability: Juneau is relatively compact with a population of around 32,000 people, making it convenient to meet your daily needs. Residents in Downtown, Douglas, and West Juneau can easily access many landmarks and points of interest, including the cruise ship docks. Whereas more suburban neighborhoods, such as Mendenhall Valley and Lemon Creek, are closer to grocery stores and the airport. No matter where you live, you’ll be a short drive to essentials, restaurants, and natural landscapes while being surrounded by the beautiful sights!

Finding Your Perfect Juneau Apartment

When searching for an apartment in Juneau, it's essential to consider your lifestyle needs and preferences. Here are some tips to help you find the ideal rental:

1. Determine Your Budget

Before you begin your search, determine a budget that includes rent, utilities, and other essential living expenses. This will help you narrow down your options and focus on apartments that fit your financial situation. Some specific things to consider are that Juneau has relatively more expensive utilities compared to the rest of the U.S., primarily due to the higher electricity and heating costs. The average electricity bill averages around $120, and the average sewer and water bill can be around $80-120. However, Alaska does not have a state income tax, meaning your tax bill won’t suffer!

2. Explore Different Neighborhoods

Juneau offers a diverse range of neighborhoods, each with its own unique charm. Whether you prefer the bustling atmosphere of downtown or the tranquility of a more residential area, there's something for everyone.

  • Downtown Juneau: Located in the southern part of Juneau, downtown hosts a plethora of historical landmarks and attractions. Walk the waterfront, enjoy the scenery around you on the Mount Roberts Tramway, and enjoy vibrant nightlife.
  • West Juneau: West Juneau lies on Douglas Island, around 2 miles northwest of Douglas, just past the Douglas bridge. This community is renowned for its residential homes situated directly on the water, offering stunning scenery that brings nature right to your doorstep.

Weidner Cares continues strong with a day of service at Clare House in Anchorage, AK!

On Friday, July 11, 2025, our team members across Alaska spent the day volunteering at Clare House, a program through Catholic Social Services that provides emergency shelter and transitional housing to women and children facing homelessness. With round-the-clock access, structured support, and case management, this shelter offers families a safe place to regroup, rebuild, and regain their independence.

Our dedicated team was all-hands-on-deck, ensuring that every part of the property received attention. The team transformed the hallways and stairwells with a fresh coat of paint, revitalizing the communal areas and brightening the atmosphere. But it wasn’t just about looks — they were truly passionate about making life better for all residents. They upgraded both indoor and outdoor lighting to improve visibility and safety, ensuring mothers and their children could navigate the property comfortably at any hour. The restrooms also received repairs and upgrades, the kitchen was thoroughly deep-cleaned, and the basement was organized to ensure that the space was easily accessible for those who needed it. Outside, hardworking associates filled in holes, repaired the roof, and planted the first seeds of a new garden project to enhance the outdoor space.

Whether it was rolling paint, lifting materials, or repairing sinks, each volunteer played a unique part in helping Clare House cultivate a sense of community.

A heartfelt thank you to our Alaska team for making a genuine difference in the lives of families in need. You guys rock!

[Anchorage, AK, March 25, 2025] – Weidner Apartment Homes, the largest owner and operator of rental housing in Anchorage, with 5,032 units and 43 apartment communities, has been well-vested in the Alaskan housing market since 1981. Weidner emphasizes supporting all sectors of the housing industry and is a significant contributor to several public-private partnerships established to reduce homelessness in Anchorage through innovative programs, such as the Complex Care Shelter (Complex Care) and 3rd Ave Resource and Navigation Center (3RNC), both operated by Catholic Social Services. Since Weidner's initial investments, both programs have consistently shown a positive impact in reducing chronic homelessness in Anchorage.

The exterior Building of the 3rd Avenue Navigation and Resource Center in Anchorage, AK. 3RNC is an innovative 7,000-square-foot facility that provides comprehensive services for individuals experiencing homelessness. These services range from immediate needs, such as showers and phone chargers, to long-term support, including case management and employment assistance. Weidner funded the purchase and renovation of the building to create a low-barrier, client-centered hub for multiple partner agencies.

Since opening in February 2023, over 41,368 individuals, averaging 2,189 guests per month, have visited the center seeking various services. Of those visitors, 1,934 sought help connecting with housing services, 2,181 used the center's transportation services for medical appointments at multiple providers, and 317 received access to other public benefits.

Complex Care is a three-story facility that provides emergency housing and support for up to 83 medically fragile and elderly adults experiencing homelessness. This high-risk demographic requires specialized care to achieve stability, which is not traditionally offered at other facilities. Once admitted to the shelter, homeless individuals are paired with a case worker who helps them connect with critical support services to achieve permanent housing.

The exterior building of the Complex Care Shelter in Anchorage, AK. Since opening in June of 2022, over 944 individuals, averaging 72 monthly guests, have resided at the referral-only shelter, while the waitlist averages 57 people per month. The average stay at the shelter is 134 days, and over 20 individuals are positively discharged each month.

"Weidner's community engagement efforts have identified housing and service gaps, intending to use a private, public partnership approach to invest in new models." Said Greg Cerbana, Weidner's VP of Government Affairs. "One identified gap focuses on medically fragile seniors who need a place to stabilize, connect with services, and experience more supported housing. Since the inception of Complex Care, many residents have successfully exited the program and transitioned into assisted living facilities. The second gap is the challenge of connecting unhoused people to housing and employment services. 3RNC connects individuals with basic services, transportation, and case management necessary to exit homelessness. Both investments provide strong evidence of each program's success, and we are proud to support the Anchorage community in helping connect our neighbors with the services they need to thrive."

Despite demonstrated successes from innovative homelessness services, such as 3RNC and Complex Care, national concerns persist about the potential for decreased or eliminated federal funding for homelessness services. This uncertainty creates acute anxiety for nonprofits, key service providers, and local governments because of the devastating impacts on vulnerable populations.

Weidner shares these concerns because innovative solutions to homelessness, such as 3RNC and Complex Care, are most successful when implemented through public-private partnerships. Critical efforts to address homelessness in Anchorage cannot succeed without public support. Weidner is encouraged by the impact of 3RNC and Complex Care on ending homelessness in Anchorage and continues to support this successful public-private partnership to help the city's unhoused community.

ANCHORAGE, AK, March 4, 2024 /PRNewswire/ – Weidner Apartment Homes, the 15th largest apartment owner in the U.S. and prominent Alaska real estate investor, was one of the first public partners to support Catholic Social Services’ (CSS) Complex Care Shelter to address homelessness in Anchorage.

Complex Care can assist up to 83 elderly or medically fragile adults experiencing homelessness find permanent housing through supportive services and case management. This facility is essential for high-risk demographics requiring specific care to reach stability.

Complex Care’s 2023 performance reports show promising data in solving homelessness in Anchorage. Of the 219 shelter guests, 80% developed a case plan during their stay. Furthermore, 94 of the 241 discharged guests transitioned into stable housing, and Complex Care outperformed Alaska’s 2021 average successful shelter graduation rate by 25.5%.

Weidner’s support for Complex Care began in 2019 after partnering with public and private entities to fund the purchase of the site’s building. This contribution encouraged other private and public groups to assist Complex Care financially. Robin Dempsey, CEO of CSS, shared, “Weidner provided the necessary resources to make the program as effective as possible. Complex Care wouldn’t have happened without Weidner’s initial contribution.”

Public-private partnerships are vital resources for piloting new approaches to solve city-wide problems. Weidner and other philanthropic investors saw an opportunity to ignite change where public sectors were initially unable to finance. These partnerships kickstarted Complex Care, and the following public investments have proven to sustain its success.

“Leveraging the expertise of local service providers to determine Anchorage’s needs while exploring national best practices was key to our investment in Complex Care,” said Dean Weidner, Weidner’s Founder and Chairman. “While that can feel risky for local jurisdictions, private-sector companies can contribute to the upstream risk-taking process to define a successful strategy. Innovation is an integral part of our business model, and employing that approach to our philanthropic partnerships provides new opportunities towards solving homelessness.”
