Arizona gives out meals with St. Mary’s Food Bank for Weidner Cares 2025!

This October, our Arizona communities volunteered at St. Mary’s Food Bank as part of Weidner Cares, our company-wide initiative where each of our properties across the US and Canada dedicates a day to volunteering at a local nonprofit.
Founded in 1967, St. Mary’s has been a cornerstone in the fight against food insecurity in Arizona. Over the years, St. Mary’s has expanded its impact from distributing 250,000 meals annually to providing 300,000 meals daily to families, children, and seniors in need. Spanning two days, our volunteers contributed to this remarkable effort, helping to ensure that those facing hunger in our community receive the nutritious food they need.
On Day 1, the event began with a warm welcome, breakfast, and motivational words from the St. Mary’s team. With high spirits, our volunteers enthusiastically dove into packing 11,664 emergency food boxes, which equated to 233,280 pounds of food.
On Day 2, the energy didn’t slow down. Our team was back at it, packing an additional 7,200 emergency food boxes and 4,080 weekend backpacks filled with food for children, ensuring they have meals when school isn’t in session.

Beyond the numbers, the day was all about creating memories that truly embodied the essence of Weidner Cares. One associate even approached the St. Mary’s office to inquire about volunteering year-round, highlighting that the spirit of giving isn’t condensed into just one day.
A St. Mary’s employee shared something that really stuck with us: “Every box you pack today is a meal on a family’s table tomorrow. You may not see them, but they will feel your kindness.”
Throughout the event, Weidner’s Arizona associates packed 18,864 food boxes and 4,080 backpacks, equating to thousands of meals and countless moments of hope. This event showed us that when people come together with a shared purpose and compassion, the impact is nothing short of incredible.

Winter is a beautiful season, but sometimes the cold air makes leaving the house seem undesirable. But such weather offers a great opportunity to spend time indoors with our friends, family, and loved ones. It can also lead to a super fun new hobby to keep you busy on those long winter nights!

Winter funHere are 5 fun winter activities for your whole family to enjoy:

Hot Chocolate Bar

What could be more fun on a wintry day or night than a hot cocoa bar?

Set out all the best toppings and garnishes, like marshmallows, whipped cream, sprinkles, candy canes, and cinnamon. If you’re having friends over, you might consider making a large batch of cocoa in a crock-pot or on the stove.

Really, you could do this with any of your favorite hot beverages. If you like coffee, you could set out fun syrups, coffee creamers, and a milk frother to get the foam just right. If you like apple cider, you can set out spices, herbs, sliced fruit, or any other garnishes to make your favorite drink even more special.

Learn to knit or crochet

Is it too cold to leave the house lately?

Next time you need a fun way to pass the time, try looking up knitting or crocheting tutorials for a great new hobby. This could also be a great way to spend time with your family or friends. You might just find yourself wanting to give out handmade gifts this holiday season!

Make sure to take a look around your home before running out to buy any supplies. You might have yarn (or other necessities) that you didn’t remember about. Taking the time for this extra step could save you some money!

Make some DIY home decor

Your cold, possibly snowy, day could be the perfect opportunity to make some homemade pieces of decor for your home. If you decide to try your hand at knitting or crocheting, you could make your own wall art, throw pillow covers, or blankets. You could also make an arrangement or potpourri with pine cones, branches of pine, and dried orange slices.

This is another activity that you’ll want to prepare for ahead of time. Check your home (and backyard!) for any supplies you might already have before making a trip to the store.

Cook and bake your favorite seasonal treats

A great way to pass the time and warm your home when it’s too cold to go outside is to cook in your oven!

Plan out some favorite winter and holiday treats and meals to make on your next day in. You can spend the day in your warm kitchen while your home is filled with the smells of all your favorite foods.

Get outside

If you don’t want to spend time indoors anymore, get outside and enjoy the crisp air!

You can bundle up in your warmest hat and coat, maybe pack a thermos of hot coffee or tea, and take a walk along your favorite path. If it is snowy where you live, try out some of the classic snow activities, like sledding, building a snowman, or starting a snowball fight. You can also spend your time outside gathering some fun winter foliage to use for crafts or gift wrapping accessories!

Have you already been daydreaming about all the foods you want to cook and bake this autumn?

We absolutely adore the warm and cozy dishes that come with fall, and we’re excited to share some fantastic recipes to get you into that autumn spirit!

Whether you're in the mood for hearty dinners, sweet snacks, comforting classics, or easy meat-free meals, we have something for you.

Check out some of our favorite autumnal recipes!

Butternut Squash Ravioli with Brown Butter and Pecan Sauce

This dish is a true celebration of fall flavors! The naturally sweet butternut squash pairs perfectly with a rich brown butter sauce and Parmesan cheese, creating a satisfying and flavorful meal.

Don’t stress about making homemade ravioli — many grocery stores stock butternut squash ravioli during the season, making this the ultimate super-easy meal idea with fall vibes!

French Onion Soup

Soup season is finally here! Whip up a big batch of this amazing French Onion soup to share with family, friends, or just savor on your own. It’s a wonderfully versatile dish that can work for lunch or dinner, especially when paired with great bread and loads of cheese!

Chicken Marsala

If you’re into hearty meals packed with savory goodness, Chicken Marsala is a must-try. This dish, loaded with tasty mushrooms, appears fancy but is surprisingly easy to make.

For an extra fun fall experience, grab your mushrooms from a local farmer’s market or join a foraging group to pick your own!

Apple Chips

Craving something sweet besides Halloween candy? Try making these apple chips! They work great with varieties like Gala, Fuji, or Honeycrisp, but feel free to mix it up! If you want a tart kick, go for Granny Smith or even hand-pick some apples yourself from a local harvest festival.

Fair warning: these apple chips can be pretty addictive and might vanish faster than you think!

Butternut Squash Soup

No autumn recipe roundup would be complete without a butternut squash soup!

Just like the French onion soup, this one is fantastic for lunch or dinner. The fun part? You can customize the toppings! While the recipe suggests pepitas, red chili flakes, or fresh parsley, feel free to get creative with croutons, crispy roasted chickpeas, or pancetta.

Imagine it…

Just picture how amazing your home will smell as these delightful dishes fill your kitchen. There’s no air freshener that can replicate the heartwarming aroma of home cooking blended with the brisk scent of autumn as your loved ones walk through the door – absolutely mouthwatering if you ask us!

Phoenix, AZ, offers employment, education, and entertainment for a balanced life.

If you’re looking to relocate to a new city, you’re probably looking for someplace that offers a strong job market and opportunities for self-improvement. You may also consider areas that provide modern amenities, recreation, and entertainment. Well, look no further than Phoenix, Arizona! There are hundreds of things to do in Phoenix, and by living in a downtown Phoenix, AZ, apartment, you'll live in the center of all the fun! Keep reading to learn why Phoenix offers the ideal city elements to achieve a balanced and exciting lifestyle.
The view overlooking downtown Phoenix, AZ.

1. Job Growth

According to the Phoenix Business Journal, Phoenix is one of “the top metros in the United States for small business employment growth.” Paychex and IHS Markit ranked Phoenix third in the nation for their number of available employment opportunities. Although most areas have experienced a lower growth rate due to COVID-19, Phoenix still experienced an increase, especially in small business employment growth. The local cost of living is also lower than the national average.

2. Opportunities for Higher Education

Although the University of Phoenix is well-known for its online programs, many higher education institutions offer in-person learning for those who reside in the city. Phoenix College, Arizona State, and Gateway Community College offer a variety of programs. Students pursuing their life's calling, professionals looking to expand their career potential, or adults wanting to satisfy a simple love of learning will have plenty of opportunities to expand their knowledge in Phoenix.

3. The Great Outdoors

There’s a reason why Phoenix is nicknamed the “Valley of the Sun.” With an average of 299 sunny days each year, the city is perfect for those who love to spend their time outdoors. Explore The Sonoran Desert, surrounded by the McDowell Mountains, White Tank Mountains, and Sierra Estrella. Enjoy biking and walking along the Salt River, which meanders through the city. Check out South Mountain Park and Preserve, which is the largest municipal park in the country.

Activities such as mountain climbing, river rafting, horseback riding, and many others are popular and well-supported in the area. Phoenix’s city limits include 189 city parks, 33,000 acres of desert preserves, and 200 miles of trails. Adventure always awaits in Phoenix!

4. Indoor Fun… When it Gets Too Hot

Everyone knows that the great Southwest brags about its dry heat, the envy of those who live in areas where humidity is the norm. Summers in Arizona can get pretty hot, but when you need a break, you’ll find plenty of indoor, air-conditioned fun for you and your friends and family. Here are some top picks worth noting:

  • Food. If you love Mexican cuisine, Phoenix is the place to eat! Try a different restaurant every day for weeks on end. You can also stay in the comfort of your air-conditioned car and drive through many eateries–and we’re not just talking about fast-food chains–Phoenix is famous for local restaurants offering this perk as well.
  • Art and Culture. Enjoy the many exhibits at famous spots like the Heard Museum and the Phoenix Art Museum. Marvel in spectacular ballet, symphony, or theater performances just about every weekend. Locals and tourists alike appreciate the Scottsdale Symphony Orchestra, Arizona Opera Company, and Ballet Arizona.
  • Baseball. Although many associate watching baseball games as an outdoor activity, in Phoenix, you can watch the Diamondbacks at Chase Field in air-conditioned comfort. The stadium closes its retractable roof and turns on the A/C for a refreshing spectator experience on the hotter days.
  • Shopping. Whether you’re looking for high-end fashion or the best bargains in town, you’ll find them in Phoenix. Check out Biltmore Fashion Park for chic styles and Tanger Outlet or Phoenix Premium for terrific deals. The Melrose Shopping District offers a change of pace with vintage and antique boutiques galore.

It’s hard to believe that a place with so much natural beauty and breathtaking landscapes can also be home to some of the country’s most innovative and high-tech industries. Tucson is a sprawling desert and majestic mountains, stunning constellations and epic sunsets, a tranquil retreat and a vibrant city center, all in one. If you’re moving to Tucson, consider renting an apartment so you can get to know the area and immerse yourself in the local community.

However, before you rent an apartment in Tucson, AZ, make sure to ask these six questions first:Discover the many amazing reasons for living in Tucson, Arizona

1. How much is the rent, and how do I pay it?

One of the most important questions to ask when looking for an apartment is how much it will cost. One of the main reasons so many people choose high-rise living vs. single-family homes in Tucson, especially close to downtown, is because it can be a more cost-effective option. Tucson’s median home value is $215k, but it’s common to find a studio or one-bedroom downtown apartment between $600 and $800 a month. For college students, entrepreneurs, and first-time home renters, choosing to live in an apartment can be a more convenient and cost-effective option.

Another rent-related question to ask is how rent is paid. Are there contactless or virtual options? Can you have your rent automatically drafted monthly, or do they require a physical check each month? What are the late fees? Is there an online portal where you can safely and securely pay your rent? Knowing the rent procedures before you sign a lease will help you avoid misunderstandings, inconveniences, or accidental late fees.

2. Can you tell me about the location?

One of the perks of living in Tucson is being close to attractions that contribute to the city’s modern vibe and natural beauty. Downtown Tucson is broken into six main districts. It is an eclectic mix of art galleries, live music venues, trendy brunch spots, nightclubs, public parks, yoga studios, museums, and breweries. Ask about how close the apartment is to where you work and where you plan to spend a lot of your time. Ask about average commute times, where the nearest public transportation stop is, and the proximity to downtown.

Apartments like The Enclave not only offer five-star amenities and luxury residences, but they’re centrally located to Tucson’s many highlights. Remember that when you commit to an apartment, you’re also committing to the neighborhood. Make sure you find an apartment community that makes it easy to get to work, school, and social hangouts.

3. What are my floorplan options?

Once you’ve decided that the location is good and the rent is affordable, it’s time to ask more detailed questions about how the apartment will complement your lifestyle. Ask about what floor plan options you’ll have, and be sure to take a tour. How many bedrooms and bathrooms do you need? Is it important that you have a private outdoor space? Do you need a first-floor unit? Most modern apartment communities will offer virtual tours so you can explore the different options without ever leaving your home.

4. Is it pet-friendly?

Tucson is ranked as the second most dog-friendly city in the US, so it's no surprise that most Tucson apartment communities cater to four-legged family members, but it's always important to ask. If you have a furry roommate, ask about the community’s pet policy and if there are any on-site pet-specific amenities. Many Tucson apartments are just a short drive from local dog parks, and a quick online search will bring up results for meet-up groups designed to bring pet lovers together. Ask about the community’s pet fees, pet restrictions, and if there is a refundable pet deposit. Take the time to find a pet-friendly apartment in Tucson that doesn’t just accept pets but welcomes them!

5. What community amenities are offered?

One of the best parts about living in a Tucson high-rise is having access to resort-style amenities. As you start your apartment search, make a list of your “wants” vs. “needs” for amenities. Is having a community pool or fitness center a must? Do you need easy access to a business center or laundry facilities? Start with the things you need, and then expand your search to apartment communities that have extras. Ask about how maintenance is handled, the community’s smoking policy, and what security measures are in place. Are there plans to add or take away amenities? Knowing this can help you make a more informed and confident decision.

6. What is the guest policy?

Understanding the guest policy is definitely something you should know before signing a lease. If you’re the kind of person who likes having friends or family over every so often, you want to make sure there is a flexible guest policy. Where can guests park? Are there rules about how long they can stay? If the apartment community is gated, inquire about what you need to do to ensure they can enter the apartment community.

Author Peter Kageyama gave a TED Talk in Iowa a few years ago to share what happens when people genuinely fall in love with their city. He gave example after example of different ways big cities like Chicago and New York City have gone above and beyond to create communities that residents love to be a part of.

Kageyama, who wrote "For the Love of Cities" and "Love Where You Live", posits that, if cities are functional, safe, comfortable, pleasant, and fun, everybody wins. When people love where they live, they're more likely to rise above average citizenship and do extraordinary things to show their appreciation for where they live.

Most of the time, when you ask people why they love their city, they mention the little things…  The cute little park with a magnificent view of the water, the charming café on the corner with the owner who shares cookies with after-school crowds, the charity runs that take place each year to raise money for those in need, and the tire swing hanging on a big oak tree for all the neighborhood kids to use.

It's the little things that make a big difference. These little things are "Love Notes." Not necessarily physical pieces of paper with hearts drawn all over them, but instead, simple acts of kindness and thoughtfulness that send a clear message to residents within the communities, "We are thankful for you."

Times Square in New York City used to be an overwhelming and chaotic place that could easily trigger sensory overload for visitors. Now, with renovated buildings, modern shops, an expansive seating area, and free Wi-Fi, it's an extremely pedestrian-friendly part of the city. It completely changed the way New Yorkers and visitors can live and experience the city. This is a Love Note.

"The Bean" in Millennium Park in Chicago is a popular tourist attraction and famous selfie spot. The entire area is designed to foster a playful attitude for anyone who visits. This is a Love Note.

The Tampa Museum of Art is an iconic piece of art and culture in the central Florida area. The addition of a dog park right on the river behind the building, coupled with a playground in the front has a way of humanizing the museum. These small touches bring people together in a way that an art museum may not be able to do on its own. This is a Love Note.

Weidner Apartment Homes has adopted the concept of giving Love Notes to our residents in each of our communities throughout the US and Canada. We know that people who have made a Weidner apartment their home love where they live, but we wanted to find a way to show our residents that we are thankful for them in many ways throughout the year. We now implement Love Notes throughout our communities to create spaces that are functional, safe, fun, comfortable, and lively.

To do this, Weidner encourages every Community Director to embrace the idea of Love Notes and implement them into their communities in unique and compelling ways. Tyler Meinders of Aspire Pinnacle Peak Apartment Homes in Phoenix, AZ, has fully embraced the Love Notes concept and is running with it, full-speed ahead.

Love Notes At Aspire Pinnacle Peak

Wake up with Weidner. Every morning during the week, the residents at Aspire Pinnacle Peak Apartment Homes can walk down to the luxurious clubhouse for breakfast. The tantalizing aroma of biscuits and gravy, pancakes and syrup, and other breakfast favorites fills the clubhouse, all prepared with love right in front of the hungry residents there. This is a game-changer for many families within the community, giving them one less thing to worry about as they rush out the door in the mornings for school or work. A free, hot, homemade breakfast is just one of the many Love Notes the Aspire Pinnacle Peak offers residents.

Enjoy regular resident events. Social director Jenny Tetesco is in charge of filling Aspire's busy social calendar. Jenny and the rest of the Aspire team take the concept of Love Notes seriously and give them in many forms: from food truck nights and bounce houses to regularly scheduled workout classes and a rapidly growing book club. "All of the events we put together for our residents allow them to feel valued and seen," said Meinders, "and it helps all of us stay connected on a personal level."

Jenny comes up with the event ideas, but she's noticed a compelling trend: Residents have started volunteering to use their strengths, passions, and talents to help make community activities successful. For example, Jenny started a hiking group, and a resident who also happens to be a park ranger, volunteered to take interested residents on an informative hike along some nearby trails. A small poker night quickly turned into a resident-led event where people help each other learn the game. A small book club has now grown into a vibrant literature group where residents take turns choosing books and hosting events.

When residents in an apartment community embrace the activities and events and take it upon themselves to not only invite others, but to improve the overall experience, and manage the event successfully, it’s a sign that they truly love where they live. These little Love Notes make them feel connected, valued, seen and appreciated. They take pride in being part of an active community that is designed with their enjoyment and interests in mind.

"We are so thankful that we’re empowered and encouraged to create and foster such an active and engaged community. The residents love it, and our entire management team loves it too. It allows us to connect with residents on a more human level," said Meinders.

From annual poolside luaus to magic shows and comedy nights, Aspire Pinnacle Peak takes Weidner’s Love Notes initiative seriously. They've seen how putting a little bit of effort into creating a fun and interactive community can radically change the way residents feel about home.

Love Notes are changing the way people live within their communities. They’re revolutionizing the way residents interact with their management teams and with each other. Aspire Pinnacle Peak, and all other Weidner Apartment Homes across the US and Canada, are changing the way people think about apartment living, one book club meeting, one hot breakfast, and one poolside luau at a time.

What's not to love about that?

There are a lot of factors to consider when looking for an apartment in Phoenix, AZ. Once you've found a perfect place to rent in Phoenix, AZ, and you're ready to move in, you might start to wonder how you will make your new apartment home.

No worries…moving is very exciting! Apartments in Phoenix, AZ, are great places to start fresh, shop for fun decor, and truly enjoy your life.

Here are 12 helpful tips to help you move in, decorate and love your new Phoenix apartment:

The outdoor pool at our beautiful Phoenix apartment space, Aspire at Pinnacle Peak.

1. Get Groovin' to Music

Kick off your moving process on a high note—literally! Create a playlist of your favorite tunes to make the unpacking experience feel easier and more enjoyable. Energetic tracks with quick tempos can really boost your energy levels and help you tackle those boxes in no time.

2. Stick to Simple Design Principles

When you're settling into your new space, keep those interior design basics in mind. A large throw rug can create a defined zone, while a cozy blanket and colorful throw pillows can jazz up your couch. Opt for vertical shelving or tall bookcases to combine storage and style, and don’t forget to conceal any messy cords.

3. Show Off Your Memories

Surrounding yourself with items that lift your spirits can make your new apartment truly feel like home. Hang up some favorite photos on your fridge and adorn your shelves with framed shots and personal treasures. Adding decorative pieces and art will give that welcoming ambiance we all love.

4. Add Some Greenery with Plants

A simple way to enhance your apartment décor is by introducing some plants. Greenery brings a refreshing vibe to any room, and if you’re not a plant person, don’t worry—there are plenty of realistic faux options that look great too!

5. Light Up Your Space

Lamps are perfect for adding a warm glow and a cozy touch to your apartment. Look for those with unique designs, appealing textures, and interesting colors to showcase your personal style.

6. Fill Your Fridge and Cabinets

Having the essentials and some of your go-to snacks ready to go makes your apartment feel more like home. It’s such a delight to whip up a meal or snack while lounging in your PJs, so be sure to stock up shortly after you move into your Phoenix apartment.

7. Make the Most of Your Amenities

Living in luxury apartments comes with fantastic perks. Enjoy the conveniences of modern appliances, spacious closets, and your own washer/dryer right inside. Step outside to utilize amenities like a 24-hour gym, pool, spa, and community BBQ grills.

And remember, when you live in Phoenix apartments, maintenance will handle all landscaping chores!

8. Build a Connection with Your Apartment Staff

Having a great experience in your new apartment community starts with getting to know the staff. Make time to introduce yourself, say hi when you see them, and take part in community activities. For instance, residents of Aspire Pinnacle Peak apartments enjoy complimentary chef-prepared breakfasts during the week and free weekly yoga classes.

9. Help Your Pets Stay at Home

If you’ve chosen a pet-friendly community, it’s essential to ease your furry friends into their new space too. Set up their food and water bowls and arrange their bed. Take your dog for a stroll around the apartment community, and stop by the on-site pet agility park for some fun.

10. Explore Your New Neighborhood

If you're situated in North Phoenix, ensure your apartment is near the I-17 and Loop 101 for easy access. After settling in, take a drive around to familiarize yourself with local attractions like the Shops at Norterra, Deer Valley, Hills Recreation Area, Arrowhead Country Club, and the exciting Wet 'n' Wild Phoenix waterpark.

11. Host a Chill Gathering

Organizing a casual get-together, even just a small gathering, can motivate you to finish unpacking and forge a connection with your new home. There’s no better way to embrace your space than with good food and friends bringing warmth and joy!

12. Enjoy Your New Home

Once all your boxes are unpacked, and you’ve decorated, carve out some cozy nights in your new apartment. Cook up delicious meals and relax in your comfy space. The more you immerse yourself in your Phoenix apartment, the more it transforms into your personal haven.
