Wisconsin revisits Shepherd’s College for Weidner Cares 2025!
As a part of our Weidner Cares initiative, our Wisconsin associates returned to Shepherds College for a third time! Weidner Cares is an annual philanthropic event we hold in each of our regions where associates pause for an entire workday to dedicate their time, skills, and expertise to assist local organizations in need.
In 2023, our Wisconsin volunteers stepped into Shepherds College for the first time. As they engaged with the community and began working on their projects, they were captivated by the organization’s mission to build a higher education program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Since then, we’ve fostered strong relationships with students and staff and donated over $4,500 in cash and volunteer hours—and we aren’t planning on stopping!

 This year, the president of the Shepherd Foundation, Brian Cartwright, opened the day with a message that resonated deeply: “When you learn in an environment designed specifically for you, you thrive.”

 With that impressive start, our associates worked across campus to bring new life to student housing and shared spaces. Projects included painting all 12 third-year apartments, adding bright accent walls, updating bathroom vanities, and refreshing the laundry room. Associates also repainted 13 exterior doors, converted a closet into a locker room space, and gave the greenhouse check-in area a much-needed upgrade, replacing a makeshift desk with a new counter that staff couldn’t stop talking about.

 The energy on campus was joyful and contagious. Students greeted volunteers with coffee and smiles, snapped photos in front of their freshly painted rooms, and expressed their excitement with simple words that said it all: “It makes me happy!”
 For Weidner associates, this was more than just a volunteer project – it was an opportunity to witness the impact of teamwork firsthand and reconnect with friends in the community. We’re honored to have supported Shepherds College for a third time, continuing a partnership that reflects Weidner’s commitment to community, inclusion, and giving back.

Royster Commons is a two-building, four-story, 86-unit property built in 2019 that sits atop the Madison Public Library and Options in Community Living. 515 @ Royster is a singular, 88-unit, three-story apartment building built in 2022.

The assets are on the same block with a combined surface-level parking lot. Due to the property's proximity, Weidner combined the assets into one community, offering 151,781 SF of rentable space, and renamed the assets Royster Commons Apartments.

Each building enjoys its own set of amenities, including extensive community patios with grills and lounge seating, luxury clubhouses, and gyms with modern equipment. The units feature gourmet kitchens, stainless steel appliances, and stone countertops. Select homes have large private balconies and/or 270-degree floor-to-ceiling windows.

Hot Chocolate Bar

What could be more fun on a wintry day or night than a hot cocoa bar?

Set out all the best toppings and garnishes, like marshmallows, whipped cream, sprinkles, candy canes, and cinnamon. If you’re having friends over, you might consider making a large batch of cocoa in a crock-pot or on the stove.

Really, you could do this with any of your favorite hot beverages. If you like coffee, you could set out fun syrups, coffee creamers, and a milk frother to get the foam just right. If you like apple cider, you can set out spices, herbs, sliced fruit, or any other garnishes to make your favorite drink even more special.

Learn to knit or crochet

Is it too cold to leave the house lately?

Next time you need a fun way to pass the time, try looking up knitting or crocheting tutorials for a great new hobby. This could also be a great way to spend time with your family or friends. You might just find yourself wanting to give out handmade gifts this holiday season!

Weidner Apartment Homes, a multifamily real estate investment and property management company, recently announced a $1,050,000 donation to the Stout University Foundation. This gift funds ongoing support for the University of Wisconsin-Stout Real Estate Property Management Program and $500,000 for scholarships benefiting incoming REPM Program students. This donation will be divided into 20 $5,000 scholarships granted over the next five years to new or transfer students declaring the REPM major. This value covers approximately one-third of the annual tuition at UW-Stout.

Weidner’s partnership with UW-Stout began in 2012 when the organization donated $1 million to create the Weidner Center for Residential Property Management in Heritage Hall. The company’s next donation came in 2015 when they donated $500,000 for additional program support. This recent gift brings Weidner’s total contributions to UW-Stout’s Residential Property Management Program to over $2.5 million.

"Our long-term investment into the real estate property management undergrad program at UW-Stout reflects my confidence in the curriculum that is being taught to students; the fact that the educators in the program have prior industry experience and can help to personalize the education with real-world examples; and that we’ve seen strong results in terms of the students that have been recruited to our team.” Dean Weidner, Weidner Apartment Homes’ Founder and Chairman, said, “I look forward to our continued partnership with the university and this program for many years to come."

With 60 students enrolled in the program and 27 pursuing a Residential Property Management minor, UW-Stout’s program is already believed to be the largest of its kind in the U.S. In UW-Stout’s new report, recent graduates from the program reported 100% employment within six months of earning their degree. In the past decade, Weidner has hired 84 UW-Stout graduates and 161 UW-Stout student interns.

"There continues to be strong demand in the residential property management sector for workers to lead the day-to-day operations of the nation’s numerous multifamily housing communities,” Dean Weidner said. “To meet that demand, employers like Weidner Apartment Homes have looked toward career pathway programs that focus on applied learning, such as the one at UW-Stout, to identify, support and target students who are looking to grow their skills and move directly into the workforce post-graduation,” Dean Weidner added.

Chancellor Katherine Frank thanked Dean Weidner for his generosity and ongoing support of UW-Stout. “Mr. Weidner’s incredible gift to support teaching and learning at UW-Stout has already and will continue to impact students’ learning and career trajectory far into the future. He recognizes the value of our distinct approach to education at UW-Stout and how this approach produces future leaders in the workplace who positively impact their communities,” Frank said.

This acquisition marks Weidner’s 10th property in Milwaukee and 16th community in Wisconsin. Vim + Vigor holds 274 units and is spread between two five-story buildings located within a block of each other in the downtown historic Brewery District. The communities were built between 2018-2019, and each building has commercial retail space on the ground floor.

Weidner took a unique approach with their acquisition of Vim + Vigor by combining the property with their other community, Frederick Lofts Apartment Homes, located on Juneau Avenue in downtown Milwaukee. The three buildings are renamed Vim + Vigor Lofts and operate out of one leasing office. Vim + Vigor Lofts’ structure provides a unique and customizable apartment experience with its different living options offered in one cohesive community. Residents can choose their building based on the floor plans and amenities that best suit their needs while having the benefit of living in a well-managed Weidner community.

Vim + Vigor Lofts offers 33 different floor plans of micro, studio, one, two, and three bedroom homes ranging in sizes between 376 to 1,340 square feet to accommodate multiple living situations. When you call, you can speak to the leasing specialist to ensure the accuracy of the online info about availability, price, the application process, security deposit, pet policy, etc. This may also be a good time to ask if there are any discounts or move-in offers available.
 

Questions to ask during your apartment tour

  1. Which lease durations are available? Options normally include terms shorter than 12 months, but these usually cost more. To save money each month, consider leasing for a year or longer.

  10. What’s the overall condition of the apartment and property? While inside, pay attention to the flooring, countertops, appliances. Outside, notice the landscaping and overall maintenance. Then look beyond the property to see if you’re surrounded by beauty that you can enjoy every day.
