Choosing a moving company can be as overwhelming as moving itself. There are so many factors to consider including cost and reputation. As the warmer months are upon us, so is moving season, so we thought we’d create this checklist to help ease your mind:
- What is your budget? Moving can be expensive. It’s important to have a budget allocated for moving costs. The fewer surprises, the better on moving day! Find out if the moving company includes labor. Will you need to hire additional people to move your belongings? Does the moving company charge extra for supplies like blankets, straps to tie down heavy objects, and tape in case a box breaks? Try to do as much research as you can and compare pricing from flat-fee pricing to ala carte.
- Ask for referrals. Referral business always has the best odds, but when you get the referral, don’t stop there. Research the moving company’s reviews, contracts, and policies and make sure they work for you and your needs.
- Reputation. We’ve all heard or experienced those awful moving stories where the truck goes missing because it’s at the wrong location, or the truck broke down and all of your belongings are sitting in the truck that’s parked on a highway far, far away. While we can’t control the surprises, we can plan ahead for any mishaps by making sure there is an insurance policy to cover any damaged items and that the customer service is the best you can get for the price you are willing to pay. Read the reviews and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Find out how long the company has been in business. Look beyond YELP opinions and include state and local agencies like the Better Business Bureau to help you make an informed choice.
- Check the contract and policies. Always read contracts thoroughly because it’s the only way you can protect yourself. Make sure you understand everything on the contract before you hand over your credit card. Try to avoid companies with cash deposit policies, as it can be a red flag. Check to see that the moving company is licensed and insured. Consider buying additional insurance for your belongings, as well.
- Don’t be afraid to over-communicate and follow up frequently with your point-of-contact. Let them know how grateful you are for their expertise and professionalism. If they aren’t courteous, professional, and helpful – keep looking. Moving companies have plenty of competitors, so hire the company that best fits your needs and has great customer service!
Moving day may never earn the title of “fun,” but with some basic research and due diligence, it doesn’t have to be too painful!
