Volunteer

Volunteers are the backbone of every community, and we can never have enough. The first step in volunteering is figuring out what area you can be of service to. Think about your skills and how you can use them to help others. If you love animals, consider volunteering at an animal shelter; if you are a good cook, try spending your time at a soup kitchen. Whatever area you choose to volunteer in, make sure it’s something that enriches both you and your community.

Clean Up

If you don’t have the time to commit to volunteering, consider cleaning up in your free time. Grab a trash bag and start picking up trash in your city. If you live near a beach, consider getting some friends or coworkers together for a beach clean-up day. While you won’t necessarily get the recognition you would if you were volunteering, cleaning up your community will give you a sense of pride and accomplishment that goes far beyond a pat on the back.

Donate

While doing your spring-cleaning this year, take the time to donate your lightly used items rather than throwing them away. Remember, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, and these items can go a long way in helping members of your community. Whether it be clothes and furniture to donate to Goodwill or cans of food to drop off at the local homeless shelter, helping your community is as simple as giving away items you already have at home.

Help Your Neighbors

While you might be thinking “big picture” when it comes to getting involved in your community, don’t forget about the people right next door. Find ways to help your neighbors as much as possible. Consider dropping off meals, helping carry groceries to the door, or even just lending an ear to listen.

You take great pride in your community, so it’s time to be a part of the change you want to see. Let us know how you get involved with your community in the comments below.
