If you have a cat at home, there’s a good chance that you absolutely adore your furry friend but cannot stand their litter box. Let’s face it, litter boxes are gross, stinky, and take up a lot of space. While they are a necessity, they don’t need to be a hassle. Keep reading to discover some helpful tips and tricks when it comes to choosing a litter box for your furry friend.
Invest In a Good One
When it comes to litter boxes, you get exactly what you pay for. This means that if you purchase a cheap, single-use box, it will smell and need to be thrown away quickly. On the other hand, some very expensive litter boxes should last your cat a life time and even some options that are self-cleaning, taking all of the work out of the equation. Some of our favorite ones are self-scooping and rotating, allowing the clean little to be reused while the dirty litter is removed and sealed in a bag to be thrown away on your schedule. While no one wants to spend a lot of money on a litter box, buying a high-quality one up front will save you money over time.
Consider Placement
Where you place your litter box is just as important as the type you purchase. The litter box should ideally go in a quiet, secluded corner of your home. It should be easily accessible for your cat while remaining out of sight for you and your family. While many people opt to put their litter box in the bathroom, it can become frustrating to step out of a fresh shower and onto cat litter that has been tracked out of the box. Once you choose a spot, try not to move it as your cat might continue to go to the bathroom where their litter box used to be. If you do decide to change the location, consider putting another litter box in the new spot and keeping the old one there for a while during the transition period. Once your cat stops using the old litter box, you can remove it completely.
Clean Regularly
Litter boxes can be gross, but with regular cleaning, you will almost forget that they exist! It’s always best to scoop the litter box daily, remove any clumps or waste, and completely replace the litter once a week. While this might sound like a lot of work, the more you do it, the less you will have to clean. Plus, the smell of cat litter can completely ruin the vibe or aesthetic of your home, so maintenance is essential.
