Potholes State Park
Set on the southern shore of the Potholes Reservoir, Potholes State Park is a recreational haven just 30 minutes from downtown Moses Lake. Spanning 773 acres with over 6,000 feet of shoreline, the park offers inviting opportunities for camping, hiking, boating, swimming, and fishing. You'll find freshwater marshes, three boat launches, and designated cabins tucked amidst the area's natural beauty.
This park is ideal for a sunny day trip and is a favorite among residents and visitors alike. Pack a picnic, cast your line for walleye, rent a jet ski, or settle in for some lakeside camping with friends and family. No matter what you prefer, you'll find it here!
Columbia National Wildlife Refuge
You'll discover 30,000 acres of rugged cliffs, gorgeous lakes, and sweeping sagebrush at the Columbia National Wildlife Refuge. Tucked in the Cascade Mountains' rain shadow, this area enjoys a unique, desert-like climate with less than eight inches of rainfall annually, making it a fantastic spot to visit any season.
This area offers plenty of activities, including canoeing along the peaceful Hutchinson and Shiner Lakes, fishing in nearly 18 miles of streams and 841 acres of lakes full of trout, largemouth bass, and bluegill, or exploring some of the best wildlife-viewing vantage points in Washington. You'll be able to spot an abundance of species, including migratory waterfowl such as mallard ducks, Canada geese, and swans, as well as elusive residents such as lynx and cougars.
Blue Heron Park
Local favorite Blue Heron Park is a 24-acre retreat just off I-90, easily accessible for a spontaneous afternoon of fun. Here, you'll find lush tree-lined pathways that lead to covered picnic shelters, a boat ramp, a fishing pier, a sandy swimming spot, and a 9-hole disc golf course. You'll also find kayak, SUP, and jet ski rentals, so you can spend your day gliding across Moses Lake's sparkling waters.
Japanese Peace Garden
For a tranquil escape, visit the Japanese Peace Garden! Step through the Torii gate into a world of carefully landscaped serenity featuring Japanese lanterns, a granite pagoda, winding stone paths to a bamboo tea hut, and peaceful seating nooks. Stroll past a sand garden and tranquil ponds filled with colorful koi, as the sound of water from streams and small waterfalls soothes your spirit. Great article. As a lifelong Moses Lake resident I can vouch for everything mentioned here. Blue Heron Park is genuinely one of the best kept secrets in Central Washington. Most people driving through on I-90 have no idea this town has a sandy beach, a free 18-hole disc golf course, and a fishing pier all in one spot.
I actually spent some time living at Solara Apartment Homes not long ago and the location made it super easy to get out to the parks and the lake regularly. Being right off I-90 with the lake that close is a pretty hard combination to beat.
I recently published a guide rating all 48 parks in Moses Lake across 8 categories if anyone wants a more detailed breakdown of what the park system actually looks like. McCosh Park ranked second overall because of the community events alone. The Farmers Market, the Fourth of July crowd, the Centennial Amphitheater concerts. That park carries a lot of Moses Lake’s community identity.
Moses Lake doesn’t get nearly enough credit for its outdoor recreation. Articles like this help. Thanks for shining a light on this place.
