Declutter Your Apartment for a Fresh New Year

  |     |   Apartment Living

Our surrounding environment plays a role in our ability to function on a daily basis and to move forward. That’s why, now that the new year is underway, it’s a great time to declutter your apartment. Read on for some helpful tips to get you started…

Take things one at a time
Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Don’t try to tackle everything at once or it may overwhelm or even discourage you. Instead, start small by breaking down your apartment into rooms or even areas. We recommend starting with the living room as that’s the focal point of most homes and oftentimes, items from other rooms can end up there and need to be put back in their place. Once you finish that room, move to the next, and so on.
Sort through the sentimental
One of the hardest things to do is to sort through sentimental items, but when we accumulate too many things, it can overshadow the truly special items you’ve saved over the years. Remember that you aren’t required to hold onto things that were gifts or that would make other people happy. If you have heirlooms, it’s okay to share them with other family members. And consider donating things that are still in good shape. Additionally, if you have an abundance of old photo albums or VHS tapes, it may be time to go digital so that you can free up more space.
Create storage space
When it comes to storage space, people tend to solely think about closets, cupboards, and cabinets, but it’s time to think outside that box. Your apartment will look less cluttered if items are stored away and out of sight. There are so many creative ways to increase your storage options these days, from attractive containers and under-bed drawers to stackable shelves and vintage trunks that can double as furniture.
Now that you have some ideas on ways to declutter your apartment for a fresh new year, it’s time to get started. Do you have any great decluttering tips to share? Let us know in the comments below.
