Not sure where to call home while studying or working at UT Permian Basin?  Let’s explore why an off-campus apartment can be a beneficial choice for you throughout your college adventure.

Discover the Best Student Living Options

Choosing the right living space is a crucial decision for students attending the University of Texas Permian Basin (UTPB). With a variety of options available, from on-campus dormitories to off-campus apartments, finding a place that meets your needs can significantly enhance your college experience.

Off-Campus Housing Near UTPB

Why Choose Off-Campus Living?

Choosing to live off-campus offers students greater freedom, flexibility, and privacy than traditional on-campus living. While UTPB offers apartment housing, this option is only available to upperclassmen and often comes with limitations, such as availability of desired rooms, meal plan costs, assigned roommates, and visitation hours, which may not align with everyone’s preferences.

In contrast, by opting for an off-campus apartment, students can ensure their preferred roommates are living with them, build relationships in a quieter environment away from the campus bustle, and enjoy freedom from campus regulations.

Fairgreen Apartments: The Ideal Choice

Located just a half-mile from UTPB’s campus, Fairgreen Apartments is an ideal setting for students who want the best of both worlds. Its prime location allows students to easily engage in campus activities, join various clubs, and attend sporting events without incurring high transportation costs or a long commute.

Here’s why Fairgreen is the top choice for students:

  • Proximity to Campus: Fairgreen Apartments is just a 10-minute walk from the UTPB campus, making it easy for students to commute to classes and campus events. Its location is also within walking distance of numerous hotspots, including Jimbo’s Garage, Lombardi’s, and Flair Taverna.
  • Pet-Friendly Environment: Unlike a large majority of UTPB housing, Fairgreen Apartments is pet-friendly, meaning students can bring their beloved furry friends along for their college journey. Plus, walks are a breeze with nearby Jim Parker Park and Woodson Park, where dogs can roam freely and enjoy the Texas sunshine!
  • Storage Spaces: Fairgreen has a great amount of space for storing everything a student needs. Floor plans range from 750 to 1,000 square feet and include features such as walk-in and linen closets, ensuring all belongings fit neatly.
  • Modern Amenities: Fairgreen features modern community amenities such as a swimming pool, fitness center, courtyard, and on-site laundry facilities to enhance your experience. Furthermore, each apartment is equipped with essential features such as dishwashers, central air conditioning and heating, a patio or balcony, and a dining area, ensuring that all of a student’s needs are met within one space.
  • Community Atmosphere: With a focus on fostering a sense of community, Fairgreen Apartments hosts regular events and activities for residents, making it easy to meet new friends and build connections beyond campus.

Conclusion

With the freedom to choose where to live, students can find a place that truly feels like home, tailoring their environment to suit their personal tastes and study habits. Off-campus housing often provides larger living spaces and freedom of choice. Moreover, students can learn valuable life skills such as budgeting, cooking, and managing household responsibilities, which are essential for their future endeavors.

Knowing this, it's still important to weigh these benefits against potential challenges such as commute time, varying costs, and the need for greater self-discipline and increased responsibilities.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Does UTPB Have On-Campus Apartments?

Yes, UTPB offers a variety of on-campus housing options, including dormitories and student apartments. However, these options are limited by availability and student year and can be more expensive than off-campus housing.

In this way, many students prefer the independence and amenities offered by off-campus housing like Fairgreen Apartments.

What Should I Bring to Live On-Campus?

Whether you're living on campus or off, it's wise to focus on bringing just the essentials. These typically include items like bedding, toiletries, cleaning supplies, small storage items, microwaves, and mini fridges.

However, off-campus living offers built-in amenities that can reduce the number of items you need to bring. For example, Fairgreen offers apartment homes equipped with a full-sized fridge and dishwasher, meaning students might not need to bring a mini fridge, and can benefit from fewer household chores.

What Can I Not Bring to On-Campus Housing?

On campus, it is not recommended that you bring hot plates, toasters, air fryers, candles, excessive kitchen gear, TVs over 32”, large furniture, pets, and heavy-duty cleaning equipment. You may decorate your room, but you may not use command strips, hooks, or large nails to hang things from your walls.

Can I Rent an Off-Campus Apartment as a Student?

Absolutely! Fairgreen Apartments welcomes student residents and offers lease options that cater to the academic calendar, making it easy for students to find a suitable living arrangement.

New year, new beginnings. Have you made your New Year’s Resolution(s) yet? Chances are, you have already thought of a resolution or two for 2023. Maybe you are trying to improve your life, accomplish a goal, or advance in your career. Or perhaps you didn’t make any resolutions for fear of abandoning them after a few weeks of trying. Regardless of the intention, we are here to inspire and motivate you to not only set your goals and intentions for the new year but help you stick to them!

What are some good New Year’s Resolutions?

New Year’s resolutions are made with the intent of bettering oneself or one’s life in some area. Many common resolutions include:

  • Be more intentional with your time.
  • Become better listeners for their loved ones.
  • Contribute to a philanthropic cause.
  • Explore your city and the world around you.

Making and Keeping New Year's Resolutions

All of these are admirable resolutions, but don’t forget to include some self-care rituals in your 2023 goals. Most resolutions require a lifestyle change, which is why it is so important that your New Year’s Resolutions be beneficial to yourself and others. Think in terms of bettering yourself and your career, as well as giving back to those around you with resolutions like these:

  • Exercise/lose weight.
  • Reduce stress.
  • Strive for a promotion.
  • Save money.
  • Learn a skill.
  • Take up a hobby.

Why do people quit their New Year’s Resolutions?

It is hard enough to maintain motivation throughout the year just to accomplish everyday tasks like laundry or chores. Often, the added challenge of conforming to a lofty goal that does not fit your life can add stress. To keep your resolutions, find ways to adjust your lifestyle at a moderate pace and start by implementing small changes. This helps you avoid feeling overwhelmed by many changes at once.

For example: if you want to exercise more, become more active in your everyday activities. Park a little further from the grocery store entrance or find activities you enjoy, like exploring a park and doing those regularly. Don’t just start lifting weights and running because everyone else is doing that. Not only will you not enjoy yourself, but you will run the risk of feeling burnt out quicker and abandoning your resolutions.

Similarly, if you want to lose weight, eat a more balanced diet. Decide what gradual changes you can make to your diet, and start by trying those. You could try introducing a few new healthy dishes each week, buying fewer sugary drinks and snacks, and increasing the amount of water you drink each day. This way, you won’t dramatically change your grocery list, spending habits, or time spent cooking.

Maybe your resolution is to improve your finances. Cutting out every “non-essential” expense from your budget might increase how much money you can save each month, but you are not truly improving your life if you no longer do any of the things you enjoy. Instead, try budgeting a limited amount of funds for “non-essential” expenses like buying new clothes, going out, etc. Over time, you could cut back on how much you set aside for such activities, but it won’t feel like a punishment to progress gradually.

How to keep your New Year’s Resolutions.

Keeping up with your resolutions can still be difficult, but don’t let that scare you or prevent you from trying. You can and will accomplish your 2023 goals with the right mentality and determination!

We have compiled a list of ways to increase your chances of making your resolutions stick.

1. Outline your plan. Adding structure to your resolution makes your goals more attainable. Small steps can equal big changes without being overwhelmed. Make a vision board, list, or visual interpretation and display it somewhere so that you see it regularly and can use it as a daily reminder to stick to your resolutions.

2. Track your progress. This is a great way to remind yourself just how far you have come. If you begin to feel as though your progress has stalled, look at where you started. Keeping your tracker on display and the outline of your plan can help keep your perspective in check and encourage you to stick with your resolutions. The constant reminder of your progress is a great motivator.

3. Be patient. This can be particularly difficult after the initial glow of working towards new goals begins to fade. When you start to lose momentum, you must remember just how far you have come since you began. Gain perspective and motivate yourself by referring to your outline and progress tracker and then give yourself permission to try again.

4. Keep trying. One of the hardest parts about keeping up with New Year’s resolutions is getting back on track after straying from your goals. It is much easier to feel as though all hope is lost and abandon your resolutions. Progress is rarely perfect. As long as you keep trying, you will continue to move closer to your goals than if you do nothing at all.

5. Reward yourself. It is so important for your morale to celebrate the little victories you accomplish. Don’t go overboard, but take the time to be proud of yourself and recognize the improvements that you are making in your life.

So, are you ready to set and keep your New Year’s Resolutions? We are cheering you on. Here is to your successful new endeavors in 2023!

The holiday season is quickly approaching, and although it's filled with fun celebrations, this time can feel a little overwhelming. Lucky for you, there are plenty of great ways to prepare for your events to relieve some of the future stress. Keep reading to discover the helpful tips that have prevented us from headaches in the past.

Prepare for the holidays by checking out our new blog.

Shop Early

Don’t wait until the last minute to start your holiday shopping. Doing so will cause an immense amount of stress to build up during a time that should be enjoyable. Plus, no one wants to deal with the crazy crowds at the mall the closer we get to the holidays. Many stores will even raise their prices around the holidays because they know people will pay higher rates to get their gifts in time. We recommend getting your shopping done early – like this weekend! The fewer items you have to purchase as the holidays get closer, the better.

Plan the Food Early

Cooking for the holidays can be one of the most stressful aspects of the season. Start planning your menu early! Sit down and take the time to write out every item you plan to make and each grocery item you will need. Go through the list and head to the store, and purchase any of the long-lasting items, such as dried goods, that you can set aside for the holidays. When the holidays come around, grocery stores start to run low on the items that have become popular, so get ahead of the rush. If you plan to have friends and family visit this year, consider breaking up the menu by person and asking them to either bring the course or the ingredients necessary.

Set a Budget

Let’s face it, we all go a little crazy with spending during the holidays. Instead of spending money here and there on gifts, decorations, and groceries, sit down and set a budget and stick to it. Our favorite approach is the envelope method. Grab a few envelopes and label them as things you need to purchase, such as gifts, food, decor, travel, etc. and add cash to them each time you get paid. Either split the money evenly or come up with a ratio that makes sense to you.

Don’t let the holidays sneak up on you! Start preparing today by shopping early, planning the food, and setting a budget. Do you have any other words of wisdom? Feel free to share them with us in the comments below.

Whether you're not a fan of the pitch-black darkness at night or simply want to lighten up your home in the evening, a night light is a great addition to your home! While we tend to think of night lights as something for children, this is no longer the case. There are many new night lights that are designed to help you love your home. Keep reading to discover our favorites.

For Convenience

One of the best places to put a night light is actually in the toilet! You will find this product all over the internet, including Amazon. When you get up to use the bathroom at night, there's nothing worse than turning on all the bright lights and crushing your ability to go back to sleep after. Instead, you can enjoy a toilet light that is dull enough to not affect your eyes and will help you ensure that you get to the toilet and back safely. You can also invest in other night lights that are intended for safety and convenience, such as ones for the staircase and sharp corners.

Invest in a fun, creative night light for your home.

For Aesthetics

Night lights are a great way to set a vibe or tone! With so many beautiful options, it's easy to find one that matches your apartment aesthetic. We love the LED light strips that can be coded to specific colors and even change depending on the music you are listening to. Or, if you are a plant parent with a green thumb, there are plenty of plant-friendly lights that you can wind around pots and plants to help them shine bright even when the lights are off.

For Peace

We are obsessed with the projector night lights on Amazon! There are so many different themes you can choose from to have displayed across your ceiling. We always love the outer space theme that projects stars and planets, offering a relaxing view to wind down to. There are also some beautiful globe night lights that represent the moon and its glow, and when the sun starts to rise, the nightlight will change to represent the rising sun.

Now that you know how cool nightlights can be, it's time to start shopping. Tell us what you end up purchasing in the comments below and whether you shopped for convenience, aesthetics, or peace.

Thanksgiving is all about spending quality time with those you love and expressing gratitude for the things you have. On the other hand, Black Friday is all about scoring some amazing deals just in time for the holiday season! If you are just as excited about the sales as the food, it’s time to start planning your Black Friday action plan.

Prepare for Black Friday by reading our new blog.

Shop Online and Skip the Lines

Over the last few years, Black Friday has taken online shopping to a new level! While we typically think of in-person crowds and waiting in lines outside our favorite stores, you can try taking an online approach this year. Most stores offer the same deals in-person or online, so there isn't a large difference in benefits from facing the swarms of people vs. shopping from your apartment. Plus, online shopping will allow you to explore the full inventory rather than the limited items that a particular location might carry.

Start Early

Every year it seems like Black Friday deals start earlier and earlier, and this year is no exception. Many of our favorite stores are already beginning their deals today. Don’t wait until the last minute to start your shopping. Start early this year and give yourself the day after Thanksgiving to relax and unwind with family rather than shopping.

Treat Yourself and Tackle the Holiday Wish lists

We recommend going into the Black Friday deals to know what you want to purchase. If you go into the store without a game plan, there’s a good chance you will buy things you didn’t even need. Take a list of all the things you need to buy for the holidays and as gifts, and try to check them off as you go. Don’t forget to treat yourself to a few gifts if you see an item on your personal wish list. It's OK to allow yourself to celebrate the holidays a little early!

Are you ready to start your Black Friday shopping? We sure are! Our best advice is to shop online, skip the lines, start early, and treat yourself while tackling the holiday wish list. Do you have any words of wisdom for new shoppers? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Thanksgiving is just a few days away, and we can’t wait to celebrate with loved ones! If it’s your turn to host the festivities this year, be sure to keep reading to discover our apartment living guide to hosting Thanksgiving. Remember, regardless of the size of your apartment, you have all the tools you need to succeed in the kitchen.

Start planning your Thanksgiving by checking out our new blog.

Get Creative With Seating

If you don't host very often in your apartment, there’s a good chance you don’t have many seats available for your guests. Fear not! Instead of going out and buying or renting chairs and tables, we recommend getting creative. Thanksgiving is all about being grateful for the things you already have, so make use of everything at hand. You can always opt for bohemian seating and offer everyone a cushion on the floor with cozy rugs and bean bags. Just because dinner is traditionally hosted around a large table doesn’t mean you have to do the same. Come up with your own new traditions instead!

Host a Potluck

Being the host of Thanksgiving can be stressful enough without even thinking about cooking. Instead of having all the responsibility fall on one person, try hosting a potluck! Create a list of all the menu items you want to be served and have each friend or family member choose to bring one. This is a great way to delegate some responsibilities while still doing your part by being an amazing host!

Develop an Exit Strategy

One of the hardest parts of Thanksgiving is finding a way to wrap up the party at a reasonable hour. After feasting and socializing for hours, people get tired and end up lingering. While you love having your friends and family near, you also need the time and space to clean up your apartment and continue your holiday. We recommend developing an exit strategy ahead of time. You can provide people with an event end time, so they know when they are expected to leave. You can also offer an alternative and invite guests to reconvene at a new location for a post-festivities kickback. Find a local spot that will be open the evening of Thanksgiving and have everyone head over there when they are done eating. By having something exciting to look forward to, people will leave your home quicker, giving you time to clean up a few things before joining them.

With Thanksgiving almost here, it’s time to start planning. We recommend getting creative with seating, hosting a potluck, and developing an exit strategy. Do you have any other ideas for your neighbors who might be hosting their first Thanksgiving? Share away in the comments below.

Tomorrow is World Kindness Day, and we can’t wait to do our part to make the world a better place! Kindness can be found in even the smallest acts and can have a huge impact on those around you. While we should all try to be kind every day, it's important that we set aside some extra time tomorrow to really do our part. Keep reading for some helpful ways you can take part.

Do your part on world kindness Day.

Random Acts of Kindness

Don’t overthink it! Sometimes the small, random acts of kindness are the best type. Go about your day with normal intentions and find small ways to make a difference. If you are out on a walk and see a piece of trash on the sidewalk, pick it up and throw it away. If you see someone in need, give them some food or a bottle of water. There are so many little things you can do tomorrow that will have a huge impact.

Advocate For the Change You Want to See

Your voice matters, and you can use it to advocate for the change you want to see in the world. Stay in the know about local happenings that affect you as well as those around you, and find out how you can take part. You can always call your local elected officials, support mutual aid funds, or volunteer for a cause that you care about. Kindness may seem like a one-on-one deal, but you can show compassion toward a whole community by advocating for them.

Show Kindness Towards Yourself

Sometimes we can get so focused on being kind to others that we forget to be kind to ourselves too. Take the time tomorrow to show yourself a little kindness! The best way to approach this is to simply acknowledge and reward the progress you have made. Stop sweating the little problems and start celebrating all the small wins. At the end of the day, we are all our own biggest critics, so take the time tomorrow to show some kindness to yourself.

How do you plan to celebrate World Kindness Day? We suggest doing random acts of kindness, advocating for the change you want to see, and showing empathy towards yourself. Tell us your favorite idea in the comments below.

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and if you’re like us, you are probably already decorating! While many home decor stores offer a beautiful variety of household items, we are definitely fans of DIY decorations. Thanksgiving is all about being thankful for the things you have, and what better way to celebrate this concept than by making your own decorations? Keep reading for some great ideas to help you get into the creative spirit.

Try making DIY decorations for Thanksgiving this year.

Focus on the Natural Elements

When we think of Thanksgiving, we instantly think of the natural elements to decorate our homes, such as the falling leaves, the cornucopia, and the bright color palettes. Many of the aspects that you will want to decorate with can be found in nature or even at craft stores. Our essential list includes leaves, burlap, acorns, and ribbons. Stock up on these elements and utilize them to spruce up everything in your home, from vases and candleholders to wreaths and centerpieces.

Change the Color Scheme

The colors that come to mind when thinking about Thanksgiving are red, orange, yellow, and brown. While you probably don’t want to completely change the entire color scheme of your apartment, you can find nice, subtle ways to incorporate these colors. We recommend switching out things like pillowcases, towels, and wall art to better represent the holiday. Because these colors are so bright and vibrant, a little will definitely go a long way.

Make a Thankful Wall

Thanksgiving is all about being thankful, and why should we wait until the holiday itself to start celebrating? A fun way to show gratitude all month long is to make a thankful wall. Simply clear some space, create a DIY sign and fill the wall with sticky notes! Each day, be sure to add a few sticky notes to the wall and write on each one something you're thankful for. At first, this challenge will be super easy and generic, and the notes will say things like “friends, family, food.” Still, as time progresses, you will have to look for specific things to be thankful for, giving you a whole new appreciation for the little things you might generally overlook.

Are you ready to start decorating for Thanksgiving? We sure are! Use these helpful tips to get started, or share your own in the comments below!

How to Encourage the Kids to Play Outside https://www.weidner.com/blog/2022/11/06/how-to-encourage-the-kids-to-play-outside/ https://www.weidner.com/blog/2022/11/06/how-to-encourage-the-kids-to-play-outside/#respond Sun, 06 Nov 2022 16:00:00 +0000 https://www.weidner.com/blog/?p=7989 In today’s digital world, it’s no surprise that many kids prefer to play inside instead of outside. In today’s digital world, it’s no surprise that many kids prefer to play inside instead of outside. While there are many perks to both, getting the little ones out in the sunshine is essential so they can get some fresh air and exercise. If you are struggling to get the kids to play outside, keep reading for some helpful tips and tricks.

Get the kids outside today using the tips in this blog.

Lead By Example

As a parent, you set the example for how your kids act and behave. If they see you sitting inside all day and complaining about leaving home, there’s a good chance they will do the same. Start setting aside at least thirty minutes a day to go outside and invite your kids to join you. If they say no, don’t force them to tag along, but rather come back from your adventure smiling and talking about how much fun you had. In no time, they will be asking to join you.

Invest in Toys and Games

While most of the items on your kid’s wishlist are likely video games and indoor toys, we recommend opting for outdoor gadgets that will encourage play. Instead of getting them the latest video game, get them a new bike or Frisbee. When kids have the items they need to have fun outside, they will be more inclined to do so.

Move Your Indoor Activities Outside

Take the time to list the activities your kids plan to do and see which ones you can move outside. Things such as reading a book, studying for a test, or even watching YouTube videos on an iPad can be done outside. While this isn’t necessarily encouraging play, it is the first step to getting them outside, and once they are out there, they will surely begin to enjoy themselves and get creative on how to stay out longer!

Humans need fresh air, and it's important to set daily habits to bring yourself and your kids outside every day to enjoy some much-needed play. Be sure to lead by example, invest in outdoor toys and games, and move your indoor activities outside. Do you have any other tips for your neighbors? Feel free to share them in the comments below.
